Wednesday, 5 October 2022 - Monthly Climate Summary for Tasmania - Product code IDCKGC17R0
Tasmania in September 2022: Below average rainfall in the west and Flinders Island, above average in the east
September rainfall was below average for the western half of Tasmania, and parts of the north coast and the Furneaux Group. In contrast, parts of eastern Tasmania were very much wetter than average. Maximum temperatures were warmer than average across the north-west, tending to near average elsewhere. Minimum temperatures were warmer than average across the north and south, and close to normal across the centre.
Unusual rainfall pattern
- Rainfall was in the lowest 10% of September records for a large area of the west, while most of the East Coast district had rainfall in the highest 10% of September records.
- Unusually, parts of eastern Tasmania had as much, or more, rainfall than the typically wetter west.
- For Tasmania overall, September rainfall was 28% below the 1961–1990 average, making it the driest September since 2018.
- A few sites had their highest total September rainfall on record, including Bicheno (Council Depot) with 97 years of record.
- Three-day rainfall accumulations of more than 80 mm in north-east Tasmania during the second week of September resulted in minor to moderate flooding along the North and South Esk River.
- There was snow down to around 300 m elevation on the 12th in southern Tasmania following the passage of a cold front.
Warmer than average in parts
- Maximum temperatures were warmer than average across the north-west, tending to near-average elsewhere.
- For the state overall, the mean maximum temperature was 0.64 °C above the 1961–1990 average.
- September minimum temperatures were warmer than average across the north and south, and close to average across the centre.
- Tasmania's mean minimum temperature was 0.08 °C above the 1961–1990 average.
- Bicheno's record rainfall supressed daytime temperatures leading to its lowest September mean daily maximum temperature for at least 20 years.
- There were frosty mornings in parts on the 13th and 14th when minimum temperatures were more than 4 °C cooler than average for a large area of the state.
- Maximum temperatures were more than 6 °C warmer than average for parts of the state on the 22nd and 23rd, ahead of a cool change.
Hobart (Ellerslie Road)
- Total rainfall for Hobart (Ellerslie Road) was 59.0 mm, which is 112% of the long-term average of 52.9 mm.
- The mean daily maximum temperature for Hobart (Ellerslie Road) was 15.3 °C, which is 0.1 °C above the long-term average of 15.2 °C.
- The warmest day was 22.8 °C on the 22nd, and the coolest day was on the 12th when the temperature reached 10.1 °C.
- The mean daily minimum temperature for Hobart (Ellerslie Road) was 6.9 °C, which is 0.4 °C above the long-term average of 6.5 °C.
- The coldest morning was 2.6 °C on the 2nd, and the warmest morning was on the 23rd when the minimum temperature was 12.2 °C.

Notes
The Monthly climate summary, usually published in the first week of the following month, lists the main features of the weather in Tasmania using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 7 am on Wednesday 5 October 2022. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
Information about Australian Indigenous seasonal calendars is available at the Indigenous Weather Knowledge website.
