Averaged across the State, it was the fifth-driest August on record in Victoria and the driest since 1982. Clear skies and light winds resulted in the fourth highest mean maximum temperature for the State and the third lowest mean minimum.
Rainfall:
Victoria experienced a very dry August, with a number of places recording their lowest rainfall totals for more than 20 years.

Clear skies made for milder than usual days, with an unusually warm spell towards the end of the month, and for cold nights.

Significant Weather Systems
High pressure systems dominated pressure patterns during August, and with the development of a particularly strong high over the Tasman Sea during the last week, warm air from well to the north was directed across the Victoria.
Melbourne recorded only 34 mm of rain during the month (normal 57 mm), with the average minimum temperature for August 2006 being 7.9 degrees (normal 7.4 degrees), and the average maximum temperature being a mild 17.0 degrees (normal 15.1 degrees).
