April 2008 was dry and relatively cool across Victoria, in spite of the current La Niña event. Less than half the usual rain fell at most places, except along the West Coast, and also along the exposed Central and South Gippsland coasts. Overnight temperatures were about a degree below normal in most Districts - a little more than a degree below in the north of the State. Daytime temperatures were about half a degree below normal in most Districts. An exceptional cold outbreak at the end of the month, resulted in significant snowfalls on the Alps, and led to several inland centres experiencing their coldest April night on record.

The wettest overall was 104.4 mm at Weeaproinah. The driest overall was 2.8 mm at Swan Hill Aerodrome. The wettest single day 38.4 mm at Falls Creek on the 3rd. Some sites had their lowest total April rainfall on record. Some sites had their lowest total April rainfall for at least 10 years.
The hottest day was 30.0 °C at Geelong Airport and Swan Hill Aerodrome on the 11th. The warmest days on average were 23.3 °C at Mildura Airport. The coolest days on average were 8.6 °C at Mount Buller. The coldest day was -3.2 °C at Mt Hotham on the 28th. Some sites had their coldest April day (lowest maximum temperature) on record.
The coldest night was -5.4 °C at Mt Hotham on the 28th. The coolest nights on average were 1.6 °C at Dinner Plain (Mt Hotham Airport). The warmest nights on average were 13.1 °C at Wilsons Promontory Lighthouse. The warmest night was 19.1 °C at Essendon Airport on the 11th. Some sites had their lowest April temperature on record. Some sites had their lowest April mean daily minimum temperature on record. Some sites had their lowest April mean daily minimum temperature for at least 10 years.
Early in the month, there was a sustained period of strong to gale force winds, which caused widespread damage and raised dust over many areas of the State. The strongest wind gust was 135 km/h at Wilsons Promontory Lighthouse on the 3rd.
The weather late in the month was characterised by light winds, clear skies and overnight fogs, with hazy conditions persisting during the day.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
normal in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of normal shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
