Victoria in June 2008
Exceptionally warm and dry June

Summary

After a frosty beginning (many locations recorded near-zero temperatures on the 2nd), Victoria has experienced an exceptionally warm and dry June, with daytime temperatures averaging around 2 deg C above normal, overnight temperatures averaging about 1.5 deg C above normal, and rainfall totals a mere fraction of the usual allocation across most parts of the State. East Gippsland received only slightly below normal rainfall, but other Districts received about half the usual allocation. The reason for the relatively warm and dry month resides in the high frequency of northerly winds around anticyclones that tended to take up position just to the east of the State.

Notes

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Tuesday 1 July 2008. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Normals are long-term means based on observations from the years 1895 to date (except for the Melbourne Regional Office, for which the means are based on observations from the years 1961−90. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record in that time, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of "normal" rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, normal in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of normal shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.
