Friday, 1 October 2010 - Monthly Climate Summary for Victoria - Product code IDCKGC26R0
Details Extremes Maps Records Summaries Important notes the top
Widespread flooding extending across the north of the State was the major rainfall story this month. However, the flooding and majority of this month’s rainfall stemmed from a single broad low pressure system of tropical origin, which drenched Victoria from the 4th to the 6th. During this period, daily rainfall totals in excess of 60 mm were observed across the State, particularly to the north of the divide.
Also associated with this event, Whitlands experienced a normal September’s rainfall in just one day, with over 135 mm falling on the 5th. Many stations state-wide recorded multi-day totals contributing a large proportion of average monthly rainfall due to this event. Multi-day rainfall totals over the northeast catchments of 100-150 mm were typical, with the top falls reported at Rocky Valley (243 mm), Whitlands (216 mm) and Myrrhee (181 mm).
Several frontal systems passed across Victoria this month resulting in generally cloudy conditions. However, the average rainfall for the entire State was very close to the long-term normal. Some locations, such as the Ballarat Aerodrome had more rain days than usual, recording 35 mm more than that normally received. Approximately 50 stations across the State recorded their highest total September rainfall for at least 10 years, with many stations experiencing their wettest September since 1993. The wettest overall was 334.0 mm at Falls Creek (Rocky Valley)
In contrast, Gippsland, in eastern Victoria, was very much below average again this month, with stations at Cann River and Club Terrace both recording their lowest September rainfall on record, less than a quarter of that usually received.
Daytime temperatures were extraordinarily cold this month, Victoria experiencing its seventh coldest September days on record. The last time average maximum temperatures in September have been so low for Victoria was 1992.
Generally overcast conditions moderated daytime temperatures across the State. Several cold fronts and slow moving high pressure systems associated with south-westerly onshore flow brought cool, moist air over Victoria, particularly on the 6th, 28th and 29th. State-wide the warmest days were the 25th and 26th with sunny conditions pushing temperatures over 20°C on the AFL Grand Final weekend.
In the north and west of the State, temperatures were significantly lower than the long-term September average. Mildura Airport, Swan Hill Aerodrome and a host of other stations experienced daytime temperatures more than 2°C below normal this month. Interestingly, Mildura Airport, despite being significantly cooler than its long-term daytime average, was the warmest location in Victoria, averaging 18.3°C.
Overnight temperatures were very close to normal this month. In the Mallee and Northern Country districts minimum temperatures were up to 1°C cooler than normal, but were warmer than average along the coast of the Western district.
Cloud cover prevented significant overnight cooling, with particularly warm overnight temperatures on the 5th, associated with the warm, moist low pressure system which originated in the tropics and brought flooding rains to the north of the State. Stations in eastern Victoria observed the warmest night on the 5th, with temperatures in excess of 13°C recorded at Orbost, Point Hicks Lighthouse and Lakes Entrance.
A slow moving high pressure system caused night-time temperatures to plummet on the 29th and 30th, with many locations in central Victoria recording frosty sub-zero temperatures. The coolest nights were recorded in the Alpine region, Mount Hotham the coldest, averaging just -2.5°C overnight in September and experiencing an icy -7.6°C on the 8th.
The strongest wind gust was 139 km/h at Falls Creek on the 4th, associated with the passing of the low pressure system, which intensified as it progressed to the south-east over South Australia and into Victoria.
The ski season concludes with more than half a metre of snow across the Alps, a most unusual outcome. This is a result of the cold end to winter and the chilly start to Spring.

Details Extremes Maps Records Summaries Important notes the top
A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Victoria using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Friday 1 October 2010. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
