Extremes Maps Records Summaries Important notes the top
December 2010 was the 5th wettest December in 110 years of record for Victoria. The last time Victoria received more rain was in 1992. Rainfall totals in the west of the state (the Mallee, Wimmera and South West forecast districts) were the highest total December rainfall on record for many stations, and very much above average for others. Daily and monthly rainfall records were broken at 10 stations that have over 100 years of record.
Parts of the north of the state (the Northern Country, North East and North Central forecast districts) were also very much wetter than normal. The wettest station for the state was Falls Creek (Rocky Valley) with a total of 313.6 mm for the month and they also recorded the single wettest day for the year on the 9th when they received 182.0 mm. Many stations also received their highest December daily rainfall on record.
Rainfall totals over Gippsland and around Melbourne were generally average to very much above average. There is a map of rainfall deciles below.
Average maximum temperatures were close to normal along the coast while further north they were 1 °C to 2 °C cooler than usual. Averaged across all of Victoria, daytime temperatures were only 0.63 °C cooler than the long-term average.
In the northern parts of the state (the Wimmera, Mallee, Northern Country, North Central and North East forecast districts), daytime temperatures were below average to very much below average. Even though it was cooler than usual, parts of the north still recorded warmer temperatures than the south. The hottest single day was the 31st when Hopetoun Airport recorded 43.3 °C. Almost all stations in Victoria recorded their hottest daily maximum temperature for the month on the 31st. The warmest days on average were 28.5 °C at Ouyen (Post Office). As per usual, the coolest parts of the state were in the Alpine region with Mount Hotham recording an average maximum temperature of 11.3 °C. Mount Hotham also recorded the single coldest day on the 19th with 1.2 °C
In the southern parts of the state, daytime temperatures were close to their long-term average.
Rhyll had their highest December temperature on record. There is a map of maximum temperature anomalies below.Average minimum temperature anomalies were generally positive and were mostly within 1 °C of the long-term average. Averaged across all of Victoria, night-time temperatures across the state were only 0.37 °C warmer than the long-term average.
The coldest night was the 28th when Mount Hotham recorded -4.4 °C. Mount Hotham also recorded the coolest nights on average at 4.6 °C. Hume Reservoir recorded the warmest nights on average at 14.9 °C and Melbourne Regional Office recorded the single hottest night on the 8th with 22.6 °C. Most of the state, except the northwest, recorded their warmest night for the month on the 8th due to extensive cloud cover.
Kyabram DPI had their lowest December temperature on record. There is a map of minimum temperature anomalies below.Unseasonable snow falls were reported in the Alpine region in mid-December. Hail was reported on the 19th at several stations across the state.

Extremes Maps Records Summaries Important notes the top
A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Victoria using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Wednesday 5 January 2011. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
