Victoria received almost three times its usual rainfall, making January 2011 the wettest January on record (the area average rainfall was 118.58 mm and the long-term average is 39.72 mm). The deluge over parts of Victoria delivered many stations their highest total January rainfall on record as well as their highest January daily rainfall on record. In the west and north of the state, rainfall was very much above average to highest on record. The wettest station for the month was Grampians (Mount William) with 289.6 mm. The wettest single day was the 12th when Jeparit recorded 161.2 mm. More details about the flooding caused by the rainfall are available in the Bureau of Meteorology's Special Climate Statement No. 26. Parts of the North East and Central districts also observed record rainfall. In the east of the state, rainfall in the West and East Gippsland districts was average to below average. Many stations that did not break outright records still had their highest total January rainfall for at least 20 years. There is a map of rainfall deciles below.
Average maximum temperatures were within 1 °C of normal over most of the state. Averaged over all of Victoria, the monthly maximum temperature was only 0.07 °C cooler than usual. In parts of the west daytime temperatures were up to 2 °C cooler than usual. Most stations recorded their hottest day for the month on either the 30th or 31st, the hottest of all was Hopetoun Airport with 42.2 °C on the 31st. Yarrawonga had the warmest days on average at 32.5 °C and Mount Hotham had the coolest with 16.7 °C. Mount Baw Baw recorded the coldest day of the month on the 17th with 6.1 °C. No stations broke maximum temperature records this month. There is a map of maximum temperature anomalies below.
Average minimum temperatures were close to normal in the west but warmer than usual in the east. Averaged over all of Victoria, the monthly minimum temperature was 1.96 °C warmer than usual, making January 2011 the 7th warmest January nights on record. The strongest anomalies, up to 2.5 °C warmer than usual, were located in Gippsland. A couple of stations had their highest January mean daily minimum temperature on record whilst another recorded its highest January mean daily minimum temperature for at least 20 years. Mount Baw Baw recorded the coldest night on the 3rd with 0.8 °C; it also recorded the coolest nights on average with 8.9 °C. The warmest single night was the 31st when Walpeup Research recorded 26.5 °C. The warmest nights on average were 18.4 °C at Hume Reservoir. There is a map of minimum temperature anomalies below.

Extremes Maps Records Summaries Important notes the top
A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Victoria using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Tuesday 1 February 2011. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
