Rainfall
Preliminary rainfall data indicates that July 2011 totals are close to average for much of the state. In the north-west, parts of the Mallee were drier than usual, whilst in the south-east parts of Gippsland were wetter than usual. The wettest station overall was Falls Creek (Rocky Valley) with 317.6 mm and the wettest single day was the 24th when Gelantipy recorded 72.2 mm. There is a map of rainfall deciles below.
Temperature
The warmest station on average was Cape Nelson Lighthouse with 11.5 °C. The coolest on average was Mount Hotham with -2.4 °C.
Maximum temperature
Average maximum temperatures were cooler than usual in parts of the south-east and south-west but elsewhere they were generally warmer than usual. Average maximum temperature anomalies generally ranged from -1 °C to 1 °C across the state. The hottest day was the 31st when Ouyen (Post Office) recorded 21.1 °C. The warmest days on average were at Mildura Airport with 15.7 °C. The coolest days on average were recorded at Mount Hotham with -0.7 °C and the coldest day, -3.7 °C on the 7th, was also recorded at Mount Hotham.

Average minimum temperatures were close to normal across most of the state. Average minimum temperature anomalies were generally positive except for parts of the Mallee. The strongest positive anomalies were in parts of the south-west and Gippsland. The coldest temperature, -7.0 °C, was recorded at Dinner Plain (Mount Hotham Airport) and Mount Hotham on the 15th and again at Mount Hotham on the 23rd. The coolest nights on average were at Mount Hotham with -4.1 °C, whilst the warmest nights on average, 9.1 °C, were recorded at both Cape Nelson Lighthouse and Portland NTC AWS. The warmest night was the 1st when Portland NTC AWS recorded 13.0 °C.

The strongest wind gust was at Wilsons Promontory Lighthouse with 146 km/h on the 5th.

Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Monday 1 August 2011. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
