Melbourne climate summary

Rainfall much less than that usually received.

Located in the Central District at the head of Port Phillip Bay, Melbourne is Victoria's State Capital. Here, overnight minimum temperatures were warmer than those usually experienced and averaged 10.8C (departure from normal 1.3C). That the overnight temperatures in Melbourne are higher than those in most surrounding localities is a consequence of the city being under the influence of the effect of urbanisation (cities are usually warmer than their rural surroundings, especially at night, because of heat stored in bricks and concrete and trapped between close-packed buildings). Daytime maximum temperatures were warmer than those usually experienced and averaged 20.8C (departure from normal 1.1C). Total rainfall for the month was 29 mm, this being much less than that usually recorded (normal 66.1 mm, percentage of normal received 44%).

Some 20 kilometres northwest of the Melbourne city centre, and typical of the suburbs, is Melbourne Airport. Here, overnight minimum temperatures were near to those usually experienced and averaged 8C (departure from normal -0.5C). Nights were more than 2C cooler than in the city. Daytime maximum temperatures were warmer than those usually experienced and averaged 20.3C (departure from normal 1.1C). Total rainfall for the month thus far was 24.4 mm, this being much less than that usually recorded (normal 54.7 mm, percentage of normal received 45%).

Notes

A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Victoria using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 8 am on Thursday 1 November 2012. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.
