Rainfall
Much of WA experienced below to very much below average rainfall for June 2010, particularly in parts of the Southwest Land Division (SWLD). Averaged across the state, June rainfall was very much below average (see June rainfall totals & decile maps), whilst it was the third driest June on record when averaged over the southwest (southwest of a line from Jurien to Bremer Bay). The only significant part of WA to see above average rainfall in June was the far west Pilbara and neighbouring Gascoyne.
A middle level cloud band brought heavy rainfall to the far west Pilbara on the 15th and 16th, with reports of over 100 mm near Exmouth Gulf. A daily total of 120 mm at Winning (west Pilbara) was the highest daily rainfall in WA for June 2010, and also a record daily rainfall for June at Winning.
Apart from coastal areas in the South and Southeast Coastal districts, most of the SWLD received less than half their normal June rainfall as the result of only a few cold fronts passing through the region. Numerous sites in the SWLD experienced their driest June on record.
Maximum temperature
Above to very much above average mean maximum temperatures were recorded in the west Kimberley, Pilbara, north Gascoyne and adjacent Interior. Pockets of up to 4 °C above normal mean maxima were reported in the inland Pilbara, and several sites in the district recorded their highest mean maximum temperature for June on record. Below average mean maximum temperatures up to 2.0 °C cooler than normal occurred in the east Kimberley (see June maximum temperature decile & anomaly maps). When averaged over the whole state, however, June 2010 was above average.
A high pressure system over central Australia brought unusually warm temperatures in the Pilbara and west Kimberley from the 18th to 20th with temperatures above 35 °C reported. Onslow Airport, Roebourne and Bidyadanga all recorded their highest June daily maximum temperature on record during this period.
Minimum temperature
Above to very much above average mean minimum temperatures were recorded in a broad band across the southwest Kimberley, Pilbara, northern Gascoyne, northern Goldfields, and Interior, with up to 4 °C above normal mean minima in parts of the west Pilbara, northern Gascoyne and far east Interior (see June minimum temperature decile & anomaly maps). Onslow Airport recorded their warmest June nights on record with a mean minimum temperature of 19.6 °C, which is 0.5 °C above the previous record.
A small part of north Kimberley, as well as most of SWLD saw below to very much below average mean minima, with up to 3 °C below normal mean minima in the Lower West and Southwest districts. When averaged over the whole state, June 2010 was above average, however, the southwest (southwest of the line from Jurien to Bremer Bay) was below average.
In the last week of June, most of the southern half of the state experienced some very cold nights. Locations in the SWLD, southern Goldfields and Eucla recorded their lowest temperature for June on record, and Norseman Aerodrome in the Goldfields recorded -6.0 °C on the 27th, which was the equal coldest June night on record for WA, equal the -6.0 °C at Collie East on the 17th June 2006.

Notes
A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 12 pm on Thursday 1 July 2010. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from all available
years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for
sites with less than 10 years of record.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.
Records in this summary are based on sites with at least 30 years of data.
