Large areas of the Kimberley, as well as parts of the Interior, Pilbara, Gascoyne and Central West registered above to very much above average rainfall in August 2010.
A middle level cloudband brought widespread rainfall to the Kimberley and adjacent parts of neighbouring districts in the first two days of August, with daily totals ranging from 20 to 50 mm in parts of the southeast Kimberley and northeast Interior. Several sites in the Kimberley registered their highest daily rainfall on record for August during this event. A second cloudband brought moderate rainfall to the Gascoyne and west Pilbara on the 22nd to 24th August, with totals generally in the 10 to 30 mm range.
In contrast, fewer than normal strong frontal systems moved over southern WA in August, resulting in below to very much below average rainfall over most of the Southwest Land Division (SWLD), as well as in parts of the southern Interior and Goldfields.
A dry start to August in southwest WA finally ended on the 12th when a strong cold front and low pressure system passed through the southern half of WA, bringing widespread rainfall to the SWLD. Totals from the event were generally less than 10 mm in the east, grading to 20 to 30 mm in the west, with some heavy falls above 50 mm in the Southwest district. A daily total of 71.0 mm at Witchcliffe on the 12th was the highest daily rainfall in WA for August 2010, whilst Forest Grove recorded its highest August daily fall in 83 years of record. Several weak fronts brought modest rainfall to the western parts of the SWLD in the middle of month, and at the end of August. Moderate falls of generally 10 to 30 mm were reported on the last days of August in the northern SWLD, south and west Gascoyne and Goldfields, as a cloudband develped over the area.
Averaged across the state, the rainfall for August 2010 was near average, but very much below average in southwest WA (see August rainfall totals & decile maps).
Mean maximum temperatures were near average for most of the state. Above average mean maxima were mainly confined to the northern Kimberley and western parts of WA, with areas up to 2 °C above normal in the northern Kimberley, west Gascoyne and SWLD. A large area of eastern WA was below average in terms of mean maximum temperature, with up to 3 °C cooler than normal mean maxima in the northeast Interior as a result of greater than normal cloud cover over the region during August (see August maximum temperature decile & anomaly maps). Balgo Hills recorded its lowest August mean maximum temperature in 30 years of record as a result. When averaged over the whole state, however, the August 2010 mean maximum temperature for WA was near average.
Unseasonal cloud and rain brought cool days to the north and east Kimberley in the first few days of August, and to the Pilbara in the last week of August, with daily maxima generally 8 to 10 °C lower than normal. A couple of sites in the northeast Kimberley registered their lowest daily maximum temperature for August on record on the 2nd.
Mount Elizabeth on the central Kimberley plateau, on the other hand, experienced its longest run of consecutive hot days (a hot day is daily maximum temperature exceeding 35 °C) for August in its 17 years of record between the 23rd and 25th (35.9 °C - 23rd, 35.4 °C - 24th, 35.4 °C - 25th).
Mean minimum temperatures were near average for much of WA in August 2010. However, above to very much above average mean minimum temperatures were recorded in large parts of the Kimberley, Pilbara and Gascoyne, with mean minima up to 4 °C higher than normal in the central Kimberley. Conversely, large parts of the SWLD saw below to very much below average mean minima, up to 3 °C below normal in the Central Wheat Belt.
Persistent cloudy nights resulted in some unusually high overnight temperatures
in the Kimberley, Pilbara and northwest Gascoyne in the second half of August.
A mean minimum temperature of 12.3 °C recorded at Gascoyne Junction was
its highest mean minimum temperature for August in 46 years of record.
In contrast, predominantly cloudless skies and calm weather produced many chilly nights in southern WA, and many sites registered multiple sub-zero minimum temperatures during the month. Northam, and Pingelly both registered their record lowest August minimum during the month, whilst Eyre recorded a minimum temperature of -6.8 °C on the 11th, the second lowest temperature ever recorded in WA, just behind the -7.2 °C recorded at Eyre on the 17th August 2008. The mean daily minimum for August at Northam was 2.3 °C, surpassing its previous coldest August mean minimum of 2.4 °C recorded in 2008. Northam has 105 years of temperature records. Pearce RAAF also recorded their coldest August on record.
When averaged over the whole state, August 2010 was near average (see August minimum temperature decile & anomaly maps).

Details Extremes Records Summaries Important notes the top
A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Wednesday 1 September 2010. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from all available
years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for
sites with less than 10 years of record.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
