Details Extremes Maps Records Summaries Important notes the top
Following one of the driest winters on record, September 2010 saw a continuation of below to very much below average rainfall in Southwest WA (SWWA; southwest of a line from Jurien Bay to Bremer Bay), with many sites recording their lowest September rainfall on record and a host of others observing their driest September in at least 30 years (see tables below). A strong cold front that crossed the Southwest Land Division (SWLD) on 31 August 2010, brought moderate to heavy rainfall to the Goldfields and Central Wheat Belt in the 24 hours to 9am on 1 September 2010, with several stations breaking their daily September records. The same frontal system brought heavy rainfall to the Eucla, with the 57.6 mm in the 24 hours to 9am on the 3rd breaking the September record. Aside from this cold front, and a few other weaker fronts during the first half of the month, a strong ridge dominated the weather over SWWA, resulting in the fourth driest September on record (comparable records began in 1900).
In contrast, much of northern, central and eastern WA registered above to very much above average rainfall in September 2010, with sites in the Pilbara, Interior and Eucla recording their wettest September on record. Thunderstorm activity in the Kimberley overnight on the 6th saw Moola Bulla record 50.0 mm in the 24 hours to 9am on the 7th, which is their wettest September day in 96 years of record, while cloudbands during the middle of the month saw sites in the Pilbara also break their highest daily September records.
When averaged across the state as a whole, rainfall for Spetember 2010 ranked as the third wettest on record (see September rainfall totals & decile maps).
2010 has been an extremely dry year in SWWA. Very much below average rainfall during summer (2009/10); below average rainfall in autumn; the driest winter on record; and very much below average September rainfall has culminated in the lowest January to September rainfall on record for SWWA. For further information about longer term rainfall deficits in SWWA, please refer to the Special Climate Statement 22.
Mean maximum temperatures were above to very much above average in the northern and western Kimberley, western Gascoyne and western parts of the SWLD. In contrast, much of the remainder of the state experienced below to very much below average daytime temperatures, with an area of 4 to 6 °C below normal in central and eastern parts (see September maximum temperature decile & anomaly maps). When averaged over the whole state, September 2010 was the fifth coldest September on record in terms of mean maximum temperature (comparable records began in 1950).
A cloudband over the Pilbara caused record low daily maximum temperatures at several sites on the 15th; while regular thunderstorm activity and cloudbands through the Interior resulted in Warburton and Balgo Hills experiencing their coldest September on record in terms of mean maximum temperature.
A persistent ridge of high pressure over southern WA throughout much of September 2010 resulted in several sites in the SWLD breaking their highest mean monthly maximum temperature records; while a warm end to the month was experienced in the Pilbara, western Gascoyne and western parts of the SWLD with several highest daily September records broken.
Despite below average maximum temperatures over much of the state in September 2010, WA has experienced its second hottest January to September on record in terms of mean maximum temperature.
Mean minimum temperatures were above to very much above average over much of the Kimberley, northern and western Pilbara, inland Gascoyne and eastern Eucla. In contrast, below to very much below average overnight temperatures occurred over central parts of the state, the SWLD, southern Goldfields and western Eucla (see Spetember minimum temperature decile & anomaly maps).
The persistent ridge over southern WA during much of September 2010 resulted in many clear and cooler than average nights, with stations in southern parts of the SWLD observing their coldest September on record in terms of minimum temperature. In contrast to the cooler than normal trend for much of the month in southern WA, a warm day on the 29th combined with middle level cloud over western parts of WA resulting in a number of locations observing their warmest September night on record.
Minimum temperatures were very much above normal in the Kimberley, with several sites in the west Kimberley experiencing their warmest September on record. Wyndham observed a minimum temperature of 29.4°C on the 25th, which is the second highest overnight temperature on record for September for all of WA behind the 29.7 °C recorded on 25 September 2005, also at Wyndham.
When averaged over the whole state, mean minimum temperatures in September 2010 were below average; however, SWWA (southwest of a line Jurien Bay to Bremer Bay) was very much below average and ranked as the fourth coldest on record in terms of mean minimum temperature (comparable records began in 1950).

Details Extremes Records Summaries Important notes the top
A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Friday 1 October 2010. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from all available
years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Records in this summary are based on sites with at least 30 years of data.
