Rainfall
Much drier than normal conditions continued in southwest WA with October 2010 ranking as 7th driest October on record in the Lower Southwest (southwest of a line from Jurien Bay to Bremer Bay). Comparable records began in 1900. Below to very much below average rainfall was also recorded in a small pocket of the northern Goldfields. Above to very much above average October rainfall occurred in the Kimberley, Interior, and adjacent inland Pilbara and Gascoyne. When averaged across the state as a whole, rainfall for October 2010 ranked as the fifth wettest on record (see October rainfall totals & decile maps) despite the very dry conditions in the Lower Southwest.
A series of thunderstorm events brought moderate to heavy downpours to various locations in the Kimberley during the first half and the latter part of October. Daily totals were generally 30 to 50 mm, with some heavy falls over 90 mm. A fall of 121.2 mm at Faraway Bay in the far north Kimberley on the 14th was the second wettest October day on record in the Kimberley. Some locations recorded their wettest October day on record and several locations recorded their wettest total October rainfall on record as the result.
In contrast, the southern half of the state failed to register any significant rainfall in October. Several fronts brought showers to much of southern WA, however daily totals were generally less than 10 mm, apart from near the south coast where monthly totals over 50 mm were reported. Several locations in the Central West, Central Wheat Belt and Great Southern districts experienced their driest October on record.
A very dry year has been recorded in 2010 in southwest WA. Very much below average rainfall during summer (2009/10); below average rainfall in autumn; the driest winter on record; and very much below average rainfall in September and October has culminated in the lowest January to October rainfall on record for the Lower Southwest region.
Maximum temperature
Mean maximum temperatures were below to very much below average in much of the eastern WA, with means up to 4 °C below normal in the east Kimberley and eastern Interior. In contrast, western WA saw above to very much above average mean maximum temperatures, with up to 4 °C above normal mean maxima in the west Gascoyne (see October maximum temperature decile & anomaly maps). When averaged over the whole state, October 2010 was near average in terms of mean maximum temperature, however the Lower Southwest of WA experienced its 5th hottest October on record (comparable records began in 1950).
Several locations in the Gascoyne, Central West and Central Wheat Belt districts had their highest mean maximum temperature on record whilst a couple of sites in the northern Kimberley had their lowest mean maximum temperature on record.
Minimum temperature
Mean minimum temperatures were below to very much below average in parts of the southeast Kimberley and far northeast Interior, as well as the Southwest district, with up to 3 °C below normal means in the southeast Kimberley and far northeast Interior. In contrast, a broad area of above to very much above average mean minima extended through most of the Pilbara, Gascoyne, as well as northern parts of the Goldfields and southern Interior, with up to 5 °C above normal mean minima in the northwest Gascoyne (see October minimum temperature decile & anomaly maps). When averaged over the whole state, mean minimum temperatures in October 2010 were near average.
Eyre in the Eucla district recorded a minimum temperature of -3.6 °C on the 8th, which was their coldest night for eight years, and the third coldest October night on record in WA. In contrast, a cloudy night on the 27th after a warm to hot day on the 26th in the Southwest Land Division (SWLD) and Goldfields saw several locations in the Central Wheat Belt and Goldfields registering their highest daily minimum temperature for October on record.
As the result of many cloudless and calm nights, Albany Airport in the South Coastal experinced their coldest October on record in terms of mean minimum temperature. In contrast, several towns in the west Pilbara and northern Gascoyne registered their warmest October nights on record.

Notes
A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Monday 1 November 2010. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from all available
years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for
sites with less than 10 years of record.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the mean
of long-term average rain.
*Official Perth observations have been recorded at several different sites with varying instrumentation over the years, and these changes can affect the continuity of the climate record. For the current Mt Lawley site, the most significant changes of this kind relate to temperature and rain days.
For that reason, current mean temperature and rain-day data quoted here are based only on readings from the Mt Lawley site, which commenced observations in 1993. Sunshine recordings are from Perth Airport and for similar reasons current means use only Perth Airport data, which commenced in 1993.
For PDF files of Perth Metro climate statistics for other months, please click here for extremes and here for averages.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
