  • Below average rainfall for WA

Below average to very much below average rainfall was reported over northern and western parts of the State, with areas of above average rainfall confined to southeast and inland central parts of WA. Most of rainfall in the Eucla district fell on the 1st and 2nd during the passage of ex-tropical cyclone Stan, and on the 23rd associated with a cloudband. For the State as a whole, rainfall in February 2016 was just over half of the monthly average. A few sites in the Kimberley, Pilbara and Gascoyne had their driest February on record or driest February for over 20 years, with no tropical cyclones or significant tropical lows affecting the northern parts of the State in February. Tropical cyclone Uriah formed near Cocos Island on the 13th and moved southwestward before dissipating in the central Indian Ocean.

Mean maximum temperatures in February 2016 were above to very much above average over much of northern, western, and southwestern parts of the State, and a few sites in the Kimberley and Pilbara recorded their hottest February on record, or hottest February for over 20 years. Mean maximum temperatures were below average in southeastern parts of the State. For WA as a whole, the mean maximum temperature was 35.7 °C, about 1 °C above the long-term average.

Mean minimum temperatures in February 2016 were above to very much above average in much of the Kimberley, Pilbara and Northern Interior, and a number of sites in the Kimberley had their warmest February nights on record. In contrast, much of the Goldfields and Eucla saw below average mean minimum temperatures. Averaged across WA, the mean minimum temperature was 21.4 °C, close to the long-term average. Record cold nights were registered in the Perth area on the 1st after a cold front moved across southwest WA, and in south coast districts on the 25th after a similar southerly burst of cool air. Record warmest February night on record were reported at Derby Aerodrome on the 9th, and Port Hedland Airport on the 27th.

Note: Observations for “Perth Metro” are taken from the current site at Mount Lawley (Bureau number 009225).
Comparisons are made against combined data from the current site (which opened in early 1993) and the previous site at Perth Regional Office (009034), which ran from 1876 to early 1992.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary lists the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

A climate summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Tuesday 1 March 2016. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

Observations for “Perth Metro” are taken from the current site at Mount Lawley (Bureau number 009225).
Comparisons are made against combined data from the current site (which opened in early 1993) and the previous site at Perth Regional Office (009034), which ran from 1876 to early 1992.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
