Western Australia in May 2016: Wet in the north, cool in the southwest

Some very wet days early in the month ensured the Kimberley and Pilbara had one of their wettest Mays for several decades. Exceptionally high temperatures were reported in the north early in the month, whilst the southwest was relatively cool for the final two weeks.

  • Record wet days in the northwest in the first week of May
  • Very warm nights and warm days for most of Western Australia
  • Australian May record warm night at Troughton Island
  • Cool in the southwest

Unseasonal rainfall occurred in the north of the State early in the month as a result of a cloudband and thunderstorms. Very heavy rain around the 6th and 7th, especially around the Kimberley and Pilbara, broke May daily rainfall records at some stations and saw some record their wettest May for several decades. Despite more than a week of rain in the southwest toward the end of the month, totals there were close to average for the month. Large parts of the west Gascoyne and west Pilbara recorded little or no rainfall for May 2016, whilst inland parts of the Goldfields and western Eucla also missed out on significant totals. Averaged across the State, rainfall was about 68% above average.

Following the pattern seen in much of the rest of the country, the north and east of Western Australia was warmer than average for May. Overnight temperatures were especially warm in the north and east, particularly in the first week of the month when some sites in the Kimberley, Pilbara and Gascoyne reported their warmest May night on record. Troughton Island's 29.6 °C on the 2nd was the highest May minimum ever recorded in Australia (exceeding the site's own record of 29.2 °C from 6 May 1973).

Very hot days were also reported, especially early in the month when several sites in the Kimberley had their hottest May day on record and Derby's 40.3 °C became the third-warmest May temperature ever recorded in Australia. The southwest third of the State, meanwhile, had plenty of cool weather, especially in the second half of the month. A few stations reported their coolest May in at least 20 years. Averaged across the State, daytime temperatures were 1.16 °C above the May average and overnight temperatures 1.06 °C above average.

Note: Observations for “Perth Metro” are taken from the current site at Mount Lawley (Bureau number 009225).
Comparisons are made against combined data from the current site (which opened in early 1993) and the previous site at Perth Regional Office (009034), which ran from 1876 to early 1992.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary lists the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

A climate summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 12 pm on Wednesday 1 June 2016. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

Observations for “Perth Metro” are taken from the current site at Mount Lawley (Bureau number 009225).
Comparisons are made against combined data from the current site (which opened in early 1993) and the previous site at Perth Regional Office (009034), which ran from 1876 to early 1992.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
