Western Australia in October 2016: Above average rainfall in the north; cool nights in the southwest

Northern parts of Western Australia experienced a wet October, normally a dry month prior to the northern wet season, while large areas in the southern half of WA recorded below average rainfall. Daytime temperatures were mostly close to average across WA, however overnight temperatures were cooler than normal in southern and eastern parts of the State and warmer than normal nights were observed near the northwest coast. The mean minimum temperature in October 2016 for WA as a whole was the coolest for eleven years.

Above average rainfall in the northwest; below average in the southern half

  • October rainfall for WA was about 23% below normal; for the South West Land Division (SWLD) rain was about 31% below normal
  • A cloudband produced record high daily rainfall in the Pilbara and west Kimberley at the start of October, whilst thunderstorm activity also brought some significant falls in the Kimberley in the second half of the month
  • Several sites in the northwest area had their wettest October, or wettest October for over 30 years

Daytime temperatures mostly near average; nights cool in the south and east, but warm in the northwest

  • Very much above average daytime temperatures along the Kimberley and Eucla coast resulted in the mean maximum temperature for WA being 0.6 °C warmer than average
  • A cloudband over the Pilbara and west Kimberley brought a cool start to the month in the northwest with daily maxima generally 10 °C cooler than normal; Bidyadanga recorded its coolest October day on record
  • The mean minimum temperature for WA was near average, but the lowest in October in eleven years since 2005
  • The SWLD mean minimum was 0.7 °C below average, the lowest for October in six years since 2010
  • Southerly winds brought cold air to the southern half of the State and produced a very cold night on the 21st. Several sites recorded sub-zero temperatures and Lake Grace registered its coldest October night on record
  • A number of inland SWLD sites had their coldest October on record or coldest October for at least 23 years, in terms of mean minimum temperature
  • Persistent west to northwesterly winds led to very hot daytime temperatures and record high overnight temperatures in the Pilbara and Kimberley towards the end of October

Note: Observations for “Perth Metro” are taken from the current site at Mount Lawley (Bureau number 009225).
Comparisons are made against combined data from the current site (which opened in early 1993) and the previous site at Perth Regional Office (009034), which ran from 1876 to early 1992.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary lists the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

A climate summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Tuesday 1 November 2016. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

Observations for “Perth Metro” are taken from the current site at Mount Lawley (Bureau number 009225).
Comparisons are made against combined data from the current site (which opened in early 1993) and the previous site at Perth Regional Office (009034), which ran from 1876 to early 1992.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
