New South Wales in spring 2007
A wet end to an otherwise very dry spring

Rainfall
Despite record dry rainfall in September and very much below average rainfall in October, the overall rainfall for NSW in spring was close to average across much of the state. This was mainly due to the above to very much above average rainfall that fell in November - a month in which the majority of spring rain fell.
Parts of the south and central / northern inland reported below to very much below average spring rainfall, whilst the northeast and parts of the northwestern inland reported above average rainfall. Elsewhere in the state, spring rainfall was close to average.
The statewide average rainfall for spring 2007 was 103.1 mm, which is lower than the historical average1 of 130.5 mm. The Murray Darling Basin recorded an average of 99.9 mm, compared to the historical average of 120.2 mm.
Some sites had their highest total spring rainfall on record.

Temperature
This was the 4th warmest spring on record for both maximum and minimum temperatures, which were above to very much above average across much of NSW.
Spring maximum temperatures were above average in the far north and on parts of the coast, and very much above average across the remainder of the state. The statewide average maximum temperature for spring was 26.2°C, which is 1.9°C above the historical average1 of 24.3°C, which is the 4th warmest spring on record for statewide average maximum temperatures. It is also the 8th consecutive spring with above average maximum temperatures.
Spring minimum temperatures were above to very much above average over much of the state, with parts of the southern inland experiencing the highest minimum temperatures on record. The statewide average minimum temperature for spring was 11.3°C, which is 1.0°C above the historical average of 10.3°C, making it the 4th warmest spring on record for statewide average minimum temperatures. It is also the 4th consecutive spring with above average minimum temperatures.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Monday 3 December 2007. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
A note about deciles: Deciles are used to give an element (in this case rainfall or temperature) a ranking. Deciles are calculated by arranging the totals in ascending order (from lowest to highest) then splitting them into 10 equal groups (thus the groups are called deciles). The first group would be in decile range one, the second group in decile range two, etc up to the highest annual totals (highest 10 per cent) being in decile range 10.
1Averages: Averages are based on the period 1961 to 1990 which is a convention of the World Meteorological Organisation
Normals are long-term averages based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record for temperature and less than 30 years of record for rainfall, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
