New South Wales in summer 2007−08
Wettest summer in 24 years for NSW and the Murray Darling Basin

Summary

  • Wettest summer since 1983/1984 for NSW and the Murray Darling Basin
  • Below average statewide average maximum and mean temperatures
  • Slightly above average statewide average minimum temperatures

Rainfall

The Murray Darling Basin (MDB) experienced its wettest summer in 24 years, with a basin-wide average rainfall of 212.3 mm far surpassing the historical average1 of 144.5 mm. It was the wettest summer since 1983/1984 when 255.3 mm was recorded across the Basin, and the 11th wettest summer on record (records since 1900).

NSW also experienced it's wettest summer in 24 years, with above to very much above average rainfall recorded across much of the state. A small area in the far west was the only region to record below average rainfall. The statewide average rainfall for summer was 236.9 mm which was well above the historical average of 160.0 mm. This ranks as the 11th wettest summer on record (records since 1900), and the wettest summer since 1983/1984 when 312.8 mm was recorded across the state.

Individual months of summer recorded above average rainfall, however, December was by far the wettest month for both NSW (95 mm) and the MDB (90.2 mm). It was followed by January (NSW 73.4 mm, MDB 69.3 mm), then February (NSW 69.1 mm, MDB 53.6 mm).

The rainfall experienced across NSW during summer was largely a result of the La Niña event in the Pacific Ocean, the effects of which began to be felt in November 2007. Generally speaking, in relative terms La Niña's impact on Australian summer rainfall is less than the winter-spring impact. However this was not the case in this instance. In eastern NSW, there is an increased tendency for wet conditions in comparison with the impact during the winter-spring period. For more information on Australian rainfall patterns during La Niña events, refer to this link.

Some sites had their highest total summer rainfall on record.

Temperature

Summer maximum temperatures were below to very much below average in the north/northeast and along much of the coast, and close to average elsewhere. The statewide average maximum temperature for summer was 30.3°C, which is 0.9°C below the historical average1 of 31.2°C. This makes it the coolest summer in NSW for average maximum temperatures since 1999 (30°C), and the 13th coolest summer on record (records since 1950). Only 3 out of the last 10 summers in NSW have recorded below average maximum temperatures.

Summer minimum temperatures were average to above average over much of the state, with a small area in the far north/northeast the only region to record below average temperatures. The statewide average minimum temperature for summer was 17.5°C, which is 0.4°C above the historical average of 17.1°C. This is the 3rd consecutive summer with above average statewide minimum temperatures. 7 out of the last 10 summers in NSW have recorded above average minimum temperatures.

The statewide average mean temperature for summer (the average of the daily maximum and minimum temperature) was 23.9°C, which is 0.3°C below the historical average of 24.2°C. Only 3 out of the last 10 summers in NSW have recorded below average mean temperatures.

Some sites had their lowest summer mean daily maximum temperature on record.

See a map of mean maximum temperatures. See a map of maximum temperature anomalies.

Some sites had their warmest summer night (highest daily minimum temperature) on record.

See a map of mean minimum temperatures. See a map of minimum temperature anomalies.

Notes

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 12 pm on Monday 3 March 2008. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

A note about deciles: Deciles are used to give an element (in this case rainfall or temperature) a ranking. Deciles are calculated by arranging the totals in ascending order (from lowest to highest) then splitting them into 10 equal groups (thus the groups are called deciles). The first group would be in decile range one, the second group in decile range two, etc up to the highest annual totals (highest 10 per cent) being in decile range 10.

1Averages: Averages are based on the period 1961 to 1990 which is a convention of the World Meteorological Organisation

Normals are long-term averages based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record for temperature and less than 30 years of record for rainfall, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
