New South Wales in autumn 2009
Dry and Warm Autumn

  • 9th consecutive autumn with below average rainfall for the state and Murray Darling Basin.
  • 9th consecutive autumn with above average maximum temperatures.
  • Below average rainfall for the state.
  • Above average rainfall for the north coast of NSW.
  • Above average statewide maximum and minimum temperatures.

Rainfall

The NSW statewide average rainfall for autumn was 124 mm, which is below the historical average of 150 mm. Areas in the North, Central and South West Slopes and Plains, Riverina, south coast, and northwest NSW recorded below average falls. Above average rainfall fell across the north coast of NSW, with a few small areas across the inland also reporting above average falls. The remainder of the state was average to below average.

The high rainfall recorded on the north coast was the result of 2 events which brought heavy falls and flooding at the start of April and in the second half of May. March was an overall dry month for the state, with April recording above average falls and May having a mixture of both, with above average rainfall on the north coast and below average over the inland, and all of southern NSW. This resulted in an overall dry autumn and marks the 9th consecutive autumn with below average rainfall.

The Murray Darling Basin (MDB) recorded a basin wide average of 83 mm, which is below the historical average of 125 mm.

Some sites had their highest total autumn rainfall on record.

See a map of total rainfall. See a map of rainfall deciles.

Temperature

The statewide average maximum temperature was 24.7°C, which is 0.7°C above the historical average. The majority of the state was within a degree of the average. Parts of the northwestern border regions were up to 2 degrees above the historical average. March temperatures were well above average, especially in the northwest and parts of the southeast whilst April was close to average across almost all of the state. The final month of autumn was warmer than average with a large area stretching from the Riverina to the Central West Slopes and Plains recording above average temperatures.

The statewide average minimum temperature was 11.4°C, which is very close to the historical average of 11.3°C. Most of the state was within a degree of the average with only one small area in the far northwest being up to 2 degrees above the historical average. March minimum temperatures were close to average with cooler conditions recorded in the northeast. April temperatures were warmer than average particularly on the Mid North Coast due to cloud cover. May temperatures were within a degree of the average across the state resulting in overall average minimum temperatures for autumn.

See a map of mean maximum temperatures. See a map of maximum temperature anomalies.

Some sites had their warmest autumn night (highest daily minimum temperature) on record.

See a map of mean minimum temperatures. See a map of minimum temperature anomalies.

Other phenomena

Flooding on the north coast occured twice during autumn. Very heavy falls caused major flooding at the start of April at many locations within the Mid North Coast and Northern Rivers districts. Between the 19th and 23rd of May heavy falls (although comparatively lower than those in April) preceded by persistent wet conditions, caused flooding on the north coast, affecting Grafton and Kempsey. Snow was reported in the Snowy Mountains caused by a cold front on the 24th of April with some locations recording between 20 to 30 cm.

Notes

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Monday 1 June 2009. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

A note about deciles: Deciles are used to give an element (in this case rainfall or temperature) a ranking. Deciles are calculated by arranging the totals in ascending order (from lowest to highest) then splitting them into 10 equal groups (thus the groups are called deciles). The first group would be in decile range one, the second group in decile range two, etc up to the highest annual totals (highest 10 per cent) being in decile range 10.

1Averages: Averages are based on the period 1961 to 1990 which is a convention of the World Meteorological Organisation

Normals are long-term averages based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record for temperature and less than 30 years of record for rainfall, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
