An archive of previous seasonal summaries for New South Wales is also available, as are summaries for other states and many other climate summaries and diagnostics.

Rainfall

The NSW statewide rainfall for winter was 85.1 mm which is below the historical average1 of 113.2 mm. A wet start to winter in June didn't last long with July recording below average rainfall following with a very dry August. Only a small strip on the Mid North Coast and a few small patches in inland NSW received above average rainfall for winter with large parts of inland NSW and the Mid to Upper North coast recording close to average rainfall which was due to the wet conditions early in the season. The overall dry conditions were due to a series of high pressure systems bringing dry air from the west and northwest and blocking the passage of any rainbearing frontal systems.

The Murray Darling Basin (MDB) recorded a basin wide average of 86.6 mm which is below the historical average1 of 108.5 mm.

Some sites had their lowest total winter rainfall on record.

See a map of total rainfall. See a map of rainfall deciles.

Temperature

NSW experienced an unseasonably warm winter ranking as the second warmest winter on record. The statewide average maximum temperature was 17.8°C which is 1.7°C above the historical average1 of 16.1°C. Maximum temperatures were up to three degrees warmer than average in northern parts of NSW with the majority of the state recording up to 2°C above average (see map of maximum temperature anomalies). This is mostly a result of an exceptionally warm August with July also recording above average maximum temperatures. The warm conditions were due to the high pressure systems which traversed over the state particularly in the latter half of winter, bringing warm air from central Australia and generally clear sky conditions. This is the 11th consecutive winter with above average temperatures.

The statewide average minimum temperature for winter was 5.6°C which is 1.3°C above the historical average1 of 4.3°C. Most of the state was up to 2°C above average with central to northern coastal areas being up to 1°C above, and the far northwest of the state recording up to 3°C above average. During winter, minimum temperatures varied across the state with June recording above average minimums in inland NSW due to cloud cover. July and August were also above average for most of inland NSW. One area in central NSW was up to 1°C below average which was partly due to clear and calm conditions allowing for heat to dissipate. This is the 4th warmest and 3rd consecutive winter on record for average minimum temperatures.

Some sites had their highest winter temperature on record.

Some sites had their highest winter mean daily maximum temperature on record.

See a map of mean maximum temperatures. See a map of maximum temperature anomalies.

Some sites had their warmest winter night (highest daily minimum temperature) on record.

Some sites had their highest winter mean daily minimum temperature on record.

See a map of mean minimum temperatures. See a map of minimum temperature anomalies.

Other phenomena

Exceptional heat between the 23rd to 25th of August resulted in many records in northern parts of NSW being broken by several degrees. Mungindi recorded the highest temperature of 37.8°C which is the highest temperature recorded anywhere in NSW during winter. The highest record breaking margin was in Murwillumbah where the previous record of 30.8°C was broken by 5.1°C on the 24th of August. Other locations also broke their all time records including Moree, Byron Bay and Lismore. For more information please see the Bureau's Special Climate Statement issued 26th August 2009. Strong winds were also recorded in southern parts of the state during the same period with the highest wind gust of 126 km/h recorded at Cabramurra SMHEA AWS on the 25th of August with many other locations recording wind gusts of over 100 km/h. Heavy snow falls were recorded in the Snowy Mountains in July which were caused by the passage of cold fronts.

Notes

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Tuesday 1 September 2009. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

A note about deciles: Deciles are used to give an element (in this case rainfall or temperature) a ranking. Deciles are calculated by arranging the totals in ascending order (from lowest to highest) then splitting them into 10 equal groups (thus the groups are called deciles). The first group would be in decile range one, the second group in decile range two, etc up to the highest annual totals (highest 10 per cent) being in decile range 10.

1Averages: Averages are based on the period 1961 to 1990 which is a convention of the World Meteorological Organisation

Normals are long-term averages based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record for temperature and less than 30 years of record for rainfall, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
