Rainfall
The statewide average rainfall in NSW during spring was 174.5 mm, above the historical average of 124 mm but significantly lower than spring 2010 (245.7 mm). The high total was particularly due to widespread heavy rain during November, with both September and October close to the historical average. The Murray Darling Basin also recorded 153.4 mm during spring, above the historical average of 114.3 mm but significantly lower than 2010 (248.4 mm).
Rainfall was heaviest in the north of the state, with most of northern NSW recording well above average rainfall during spring, including record-breaking totals at several stations, and falls as high as 647.2 mm at Yarras. Much of this was due to two heavy rain events in northern NSW, the first associated with an East Coast Low from 24 to 26 September and the second due to a low pressure trough between 23 and 26 November. Southern NSW recorded closer to average rainfall during spring, although the highest seasonal total anywhere in the state was 719 mm at Mt Perisher.

NSW recorded a statewide average maximum temperature of 25.4 °C during spring, 1.1 °C above the historical average of 24.3 °C and significantly warmer than spring 2010 (23.2 °C). All of NSW recorded above average temperatures during the season, with temperatures warmest in the south and west of the state where rainfall was lower. Temperatures were particularly warm in early spring, with the 10th warmest September on record for NSW.
The spring average minimum temperature in NSW was 11 °C, 0.7 °C above the historical average of 10.3 °C. Minimums were warmest towards the end of the season, with the 6th warmest November on record, following close to average temperatures during September and October. Nights were particularly warm along the southern border and coastal NSW, including the second warmest spring on record at Yarras and Thredbo.
The statewide mean temperature for NSW during spring was consequently 18.2 °C, 0.9 °C above the historical average.
Some sites had their coldest spring day (lowest maximum temperature) on record.

A Seasonal Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Thursday 1 December 2011. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
