NSW in spring 2012: A warm, dry spring for NSW

  • Driest spring since 2006
  • 5th warmest spring on record for maximum temperatures
  • Coolest spring nights since 2003

Rainfall - Driest spring since 2002

New South Wales recorded a statewide average rainfall of 66 mm during spring, well below the historical average of 124 mm and the driest spring since 2006. Rainfall was below average across the state, with particularly dry conditions in parts of the northeast and along the southwestern border. All three months were drier than average across the state, with driest conditions during September and October associated with a positive Indian Ocean Dipole event.

There were few significant rain events during the season. An East Coast Low off the south coast brought very heavy localised falls on October 12, with 233 mm recorded at Ulladulla and the wettest spring day on record for Batemans Bay. Localised heavy falls during a rain event in southwest NSW on November 8 also broke spring rainfall records for Griffith, while Guyra recorded its wettest spring day on record during severe thunderstorm activity on November 18, when falls reached 159.8 mm at Coffs Harbour.

Temperature - Hot days, cold nights, and a heatwave

The statewide average maximum temperature during spring was 26.5 °C, 2.2 °C above the historical average. This is the 5th warmest spring in NSW since records began in 1950, and the warmest spring since 2009. Temperatures were warmer than average across the state, with mildest conditions on the coast, while most of northern and western NSW was more than 2 °C warmer than normal, including the equal warmest spring on record at Broken Hill (Patton St) and Tibooburra PO. All three months recorded well above average maximum temperatures, associated with the dry and sunny conditions during the season.

Minimum temperatures were during spring were close to the historical average of 10.3 °C. This was the coolest spring for NSW since 2003, with slightly below average temperatures across most of the state. Nights were generally cool in September and October, associated with dry, clear conditions and anomalously southerly winds, while nights were warmer than normal at the end of the season when cloudiness increased. The mean temperature for NSW during spring was consequently 1.1 °C above the historical average.

Spring began with a late cool spell, with minimum temperatures on the 1st and 2nd of September breaking records at several sites. There was also a significant cold spell during mid-October, with unseasonable cool conditions resulting in widespread snow on the Tablelands between the 11th and 13th.

There were several warm spells during the season, with a significant early season hot spell on the 27th-28th of September that broke widespread records for minimum temperatures. The season also ended with the most widespread and persistent hot spell for NSW since November 2009, with most of inland NSW recording days more than 8 °C above normal and nights more than 6 °C above normal, breaking several spring records.

Notes

A Seasonal Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 8 am on Monday 3 December 2012. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.
