NSW in winter 2013: Second-warmest winter on record

  • Second-warmest winter on record.
  • Wettest June since 2005; dry July and August.

Rainfall - Close to average rainfall hides a wet start and dry finish

NSW recorded a statewide average rainfall of 117.3 mm during winter 2013, close to the historical average of 116.0 mm. The Murray-Darling Basin also recorded close to average totals (111.5 mm, average 111.1 mm), with average to above average totals across most of the state with the exception of parts of the northern border and north coast.

Most of the rain fell during June, which was the wettest for NSW since 2005 with above average totals across almost the entire state. There were two surface troughs that brought widespread rain to inland NSW on 1-2 and 12-13 June, breaking some daily records, while an East Coast Low produced heavy rain on the south coast on 24-26 June. A strengthening high pressure ridge resulted in drier conditions during the rest of the season, with slightly below average rain in July (particularly on the coast) followed by the tenth-driest August on record.

Some sites had their highest winter daily rainfall on record.

Temperature - Second-warmest winter on record

The statewide average mean temperature for NSW during winter was 1.47 °C above the historical average and the second-warmest winter on record, slightly below the record winter of 2009 (+1.50 °C). Temperatures were within the warmest 10% of years across the entire state, with 22% of the state and 30 stations recording the warmest winter on record, including Sydney, Broken Hill, Cobar and Canberra.

The mean maximum temperature during winter was 1.6 °C above average and the second-warmest on record, with particularly warm temperatures in the north and east where twenty stations broke winter records. Days were well above average during both July and August, associated with dry, sunny conditions and anomalously northwesterly winds, but closer to average during June when rainfall was higher. The warm winter maximum temperatures contributed to NSW recording its warmest start to a year on record, with January-August maximum temperatures 1.4 °C above average.

The mean minimum temperature was 1.3 °C above average and the eighth-warmest on record, with warmer than average nights across the state including the warmest winter on record at ten locations. Nights were above average throughout the season but particularly warm during July, which was the warmest since 2005.

Notes

A Seasonal Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 8 am on Monday 2 September 2013. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

The ACORN-SAT dataset is being used for temperature area averages from December 2012 onwards. The major change from earlier datasets is that the ACORN-SAT dataset commences in 1910, rather than 1950, and hence rankings are calculated using a larger set of years.
