NSW in spring 2013: Warm, dry spring for NSW

  • Third-warmest spring on record for NSW maximum temperatures
  • Below average rain, but heavy rain events in eastern NSW

Rainfall - Dry conditions, some heavy rain events

NSW recorded a statewide average rainfall of 82.6 mm during spring 2013, well below the historical average of 124.0 mm. Rainfall was generally below average across most of inland NSW, including the driest spring since 1982 at stations including Cobar and Coonabarabran, with above average totals restricted to the coastal strip. The Murray Darling Basin recorded 67.2 mm of rain, almost half the historical average of 114.3 mm.

Conditions were driest during October, which was the eighth-driest on record associated with well above average pressure and a lack of rain-bearing fronts. During November, a series of complex surface troughs and significant thunderstorm activity produced well above average rainfall in eastern NSW, with dry conditions persisting in the west of the state.

The most significant rain event of the season occurred during September, with heavy rain across most of eastern NSW on the 17th, reaching 220.4 mm at Robertson and breaking the September daily rainfall record for Canberra. Complex surface troughs produced heavy rain in eastern NSW on 11-12 and 16-19 November, with a localised low pressure system producing falls of up to 214.6 mm at Paterson on the 18th, breaking several records across the Central Coast.

Temperature - Third-warmest spring on record

The statewide average maximum temperature during spring 2013 was 2.7 °C above the historical average and the third-warmest spring on record for NSW, following 2002 and 2006. Temperatures were more than 2 °C above average across much of the state, warmest in the north, with several coastal stations experiencing their warmest spring on record including Sydney, Coffs Harbour, and Montague Island. Days were warmest during the first part of the season, with the warmest September on record for NSW breaking records across 75% of the state, while temperatures were closer to normal in November as rainfall increased.

The average minimum temperature was 0.5 °C above the historical average, with temperatures generally within 1 °C of average across most of the state. Minimums were also very warm during September, which was the third-warmest on record, but followed by slightly below average nights in October and November including several frost events that caused significant agricultural damage during October.

The mean temperature was consequently 1.6 °C above the historical average, the sixth-warmest spring on record for NSW.

Other phenomena

There were several strong wind events and severe thunderstorms during the season, with two tornadoes causing damage in November.

Bushfire activity was early and severe during September and October, with notable bushfires causing damage in the Blue Mountains on 10 September, in the Taree region on 26 September, and the Port Stephens region on 13 November. The most severe bushfire period was between 17-23 October, with close to 250 buildings destroyed across the state, notably in the Blue Mountains, Newcastle, and Balmoral regions.

Notes

A Seasonal Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 8 am on Monday 2 December 2013. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

The ACORN-SAT dataset is being used for temperature area averages from December 2012 onwards. The major change from earlier datasets is that the ACORN-SAT dataset commences in 1910, rather than 1950, and hence rankings are calculated using a larger set of years.
