Dry Season (May to September 2010):

Wet Northern Territory - hot in the north, cool in the south

Rainfall was above average to well above average throughout most of the Northern Territory during the season. Maximum temperatures were above normal over the Top End and below average in the south. The minimum temperatures remained above average over most of the Territory.

La Niña and the NT dry season

The weather across the NT during the season was partly driven by changes in sea surface temperature as a result of the strong La Niña event that developed during the season. Above average sea surface temperatures in the Timor and Arafura Seas and in the Eastern Indian Ocean brought above average rainfall to the whole region. The warm ocean surrounding the Top End helped to keep the temperatures in the Darwin-Daly district above normal for most of the season. The La Niña conditions in place now are very similar to that of the 1998/1999 and the 1974/1975 La Niña events with comparable effects on the NT weather.

Rainfall

The 2010 dry season has been exceptionally wet with widespread heavy rainfall throughout the Territory. Several stations in the Alice Springs District measured their highest dry season rainfall on record. Widespread rainfall during May and unseasonal rainfall throughout the Territory during July and September contributed to the above average rainfall for the season.  Cloudbands associated with the upper air circulation in the tropics and the passage of several frontal systems through the southern parts of the Territory contributed to the above average rainfall in the region.

The wettest overall was 312.0 mm at The Garden, followed by 291.6 mm at Jervois and then 267.9 mm at Arltunga.

The driest overall was 0.2 mm at McArthur River Mine, followed by 0.5 mm at Baileys Grave GS.

Some sites had their highest total dry season rainfall on record.

The wettest single day 119.0 mm at Idracowra on 13 Jul, this marked the highest dry season daily rainfall on record for this site. The next wettest day was 118.0 mm at Upper Adelaide River on 29 May and then 115.9 mm at Burrell's Creek on 18 May.

Maximum temperature

Maximum temperatures generally remained above average over the Top End and below average in the south during the season. The Top End remained consistently warmer than normal each month during the season.  The maximum temperatures in the Alice Springs district remained around 2 °C below average.

Minimum temperature

Minimum temperatures remained up to 1.5°C warmer than the long term mean over most of the Top End. Minimums remained up to 1 °C warmer than normal in the rest of the Territory. Warm minimums in the southern parts of the Territory are consistent with the above average rainfall and cloudiness in the area.

Notes

This statement was prepared before all data for the period were available. This may affect some of the statistics presented.

A Seasonal Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Northern Territory using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 3 pm on Friday 1 October 2010. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages are long-term means based on observations from the years 1800 to 2006. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record in that time, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.
