Queensland Seasonal Climate Summary Spring 2006

Summary

Very dry conditions persisted for much of the state during spring. A hot spell at the end of November brought record high temperatures to parts of western Queensland.

Rainfall

Much of state recorded below average rainfall with parts of the west, southern interior and western Cape York Peninsula equalling their previous driest spring on record. Rainfall was closer to average, however, over parts of the east coast, with above average totals in the Townsville to Cairns region. The highest spring rainfall total in the state was 573.8 mm at Babinda Post Office (average 413 mm). No rainfall was recorded during the 3 months of spring at a number of locations including Birdsville and Kowayama, while just 0.4 mm was recorded at Julia Creek and Urandangi.

Maximum temperature

Spring mean maximum temperatures were well above average in the southern interior and much of western Queensland. Elsewhere they were generally within a degree of average. A hot spell at the end of November brought record spring daily maximum temperatures to western areas.

The hottest day was 48.5°C at Birdsville Airport on 30 November. The coldest day was 11.4°C at Applethorpe on 7 September.

Some paces had their highest spring temperature on record.

Minimum temperature

Minimum temperatures were well above average in the southern interior and southwest, while mean overnight temperatures were near or cooler than average in northern and parts of central Queensland. Elsewhere mean minimum temperatures were within a degree of average. The hot spell at the end of the month also brought record high minimum temperatures to a number of places.

The coldest night was −0.7°C at Stanthorpe Leslie Parade on 9 September. The warmest night was 32.6°C at Thargomindah Airport on 28 November.
