Queensland Seasonal Climate Summary Summer 2006−07

Summary

Below average rainfall was recorded in the southeast of the state, while heavy rain brought above average rain to the southwest and north tropical coast. 

Summer temperatures were generally milder than average, though both hot and cold extremes brought new summer records during December.

Rainfall

Summer rainfall totals were below average over southeast Queensland, the Capricornia and parts of the Central Coalfields and Maranoa. Rainfall totals were particularly low in a number of locations, especially in the Darling Downs and Granite Belt. Record low summer rainfall totals were recorded at a number of places including Nobby with 106.5 mm (average 294 mm, 67 years of record), Dunmore State Forest with 84.0 mm (average 276 mm, 64 years of record) and Ballandean with 127.6 mm (average 289 mm, 38 years of record).

A tropical depression which tracked from Central Australia through southwest Queensland during January brought very heavy rainfall and led to higher than average summer rainfall in the southwest of the state. 

Elsewhere in the state, rainfall totals were mixed, with parts of Cape York Peninsula and the northwest drier than average, while parts of central Queensland and the North Tropical Coast received above average rainfall.

Monsoon activity during January and early February brought heavy rainfall to parts of the tropics, especially the north tropical coast. The monsoon triggered the development of Tropical Cyclone Nelson in early February, bringing heavy rainfall to island communities in the Gulf. Nelson, however quickly dissipated after crossing the coast over southwestern Cape York Peninsula. 

December and much of February saw less activity in the tropics, though by the end of February, another burst of monsoon activitity was developing, and likely to bring heavy rainfall to parts of the state in early March.

Temperature

Maximum temperatures were cooler than average over much of the state, apart from the southern interior and Cape York Peninsula. Refer to the map of maximum temperature anomalies.

While much of the country experienced an unusually hot summer, Queensland, as a whole, was cooler, with  average maximum temperatures the coolest since 2000. A surface cold front and cloud cover associated with an upper trough combined to bring record low December maximum temperatures to many parts of central and southern Queensland between the 25th and 27th. In contrast, a hot spell in early December saw new record maximum temperatures at Winton and Toorak. See the list of new summer temperature records for more details.

Overnight minimum temperatures were warmer than average in the southern interior, while elsewhere in the state, they were generally within a degree of average. Refer to the map of minimum temperature anomalies.
