Mild and wet summer for most of Queensland

Seasonal rainfall was above to very much above the long term average over eastern and central districts of the state. In contast, the western parts of the state received average to very much below average falls along the Northern Territory border.  Daytime temperatures were below average in most parts, with the main exception in the drier western border areas. Taking the state as a whole, it was the wettest summer since 1990 and the coolest since 2000.

Rainfall

Across the state, most of the central and eastern districts received above to very much above average summer rainfall, with only the far western districts failing to receive average seasonal rainfall.  

Burst of monsoon activity during January and Feburary brought many heavy rainfall events particularly to eastern and central districts.  Flooding in a number of river systems as well as localised flash flooding caused havoc in many districts.

Some sites had their highest total summer rainfall on record.

The wettest places overall were Upper Springbrook Alert with 2272 mm, followed by Hospital Bridge Alert in the Mackay area with 2035 mm , followed by 2030.4 mm at Crystal Brook, located near Proserpine.  

The wettest single day was 625.0 mm at East Mackay on 15 Feb 2008.

Brisbane recieved 480.4 mm for the season, compared to the long term average of 444.8 mm.

Temperature

Largely influenced by cloud cover, mean maximum temperatures were below average over most of the state, with exceptions in the western border areas and a few pockets in the northern tropics. Minimum temperatures were within a degree of average in most parts, though warmer averages were recorded in a few areas, most notably near the western border.  

The hottest day was 46.0°C at Bedourie Police Station on 31 Jan 2008 and the coldest day was 18.8°C at Toowoomba Airport on 26 Feb 2008.

Some sites had their lowest summer mean daily maximum temperature on record.

The coldest night was 8.5°C at Applethorpe on 10 Feb 2008, and the warmest night was 32.8°C at Birdsville Airport on 16 Jan 2008.

Brisbane's mean maximum temperature during Summer was 28.8°C (−0.4 below average) while the mean minimum temperature was 21°C (+0.6 above average)
