Queensland in autumn 2008

After a healthy wet season in Queensland, the rainfall plumetted sharply through autumn, with numerous low rainfall records broken in this period.  The far Northern Tropics and Wide Bay and Burnett districts were the only notable exceptions to this trend.  The low pressure system that developed to the east of Fraser Island at the end of the season resulted in average rainfall over the coastal areas of the Wide Bay and Burnett area. Prior to this rain event, that area would have been below average for autumn.

Rainfall

The autumn dry spell affected most of the state except parts of the North Tropical coast and Peninsula, and the coastal regions of the Wide Bay and Burnett districts. Around two thirds of the state received below to very much below average rainfall for autumn. The areas mostly affected include the Whitsunday coast, the Herbert and Lower Burdekin, parts of the Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders, and a few patches on the open grasslands between Longreach and Charleville. Some sites had their lowest total autumn rainfall on record.

Though March to May totals are historically low for inland regions, some stations did not report any rain for the whole three month period.  See a map of total rainfall as well as a map of rainfall deciles.

Exceptions to this dry trend were parts of the North Tropical coast which received good March and May rainfalls, and parts of the Wide Bay and Burnett which received some heavy rainfall in the last days of autumn. The area was lifted out of below average rainfall for the season with some exceptional two day totals about Hervey Bay and Maryborough on 30th and 31st of May (a two day total of 214.2 mm at Hervey Bay, and 189.6 mm at Maryborough).  See a map of daily rainfall totals for 9am on the 30th, and 9am on the 31st.

The wettest spot in the state for the season was Bellenden Ker Top Station with 3869 mm, followed by Bulgun Creek Alert with 2083 mm, then Tree House Creek with 1990 mm.  The highest daily rainfall was recorded at 9am on the 5th of March, when 446.2 mm fell at Port Douglas and 364 mm at Topaz.

Brisbane recorded 110.6 mm of rainfall in autumn, where the long term average for is 302.8 mm.

Temperature

Overall, daytime maximum temperatures showed no signifiant shift from the long-term autumn average.  See a map of mean maximum temperatures as well as a map of maximum temperature anomalies.

This was certainly not the case with minimum (night-time) temperatures. Within an extensive area spanning the Warrego and Maranoa, Darling Downs and Granite Belt, along with parts of the Southeast Coast and elevated areas of the central and northern districts,  numerous stations reported their lowest autumn mean daily minimum temperature on record.

The entire state, apart from the very northern tip of the Peninsula, was below the long term average for autumn, with some places up to 4 °C below.  Kowanyama measured its lowest ever daily autumn temperature of 8.5 °C.

See a map of mean minimum temperatures. See a map of minimum temperature anomalies.

Brisbane recorded a mean maximum of 25.9°C (equal to the long term average) and a mean minimum of 15.3°C (−0.9°C below the average).

Notes

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Sunday 1 June 2008. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Normals are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably. *In this case, normals from a nearby suitable site may be included to calculate statistics  (these are marked with an *).

The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of "normal" rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, normal in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of normal shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.
