Queensland in winter 2008

Winter rainfall was at least average for the majority of the state, apart for the far north west bordering the Northern Territory which was just below average.  

Both maximum and minimum temperatures were within a degree of the long term average for winter, despite some cool individual days and nights during the season.

Rainfall

Although the last month of winter was dry, rainfall for the entire three month period was average to above average across most of the state. Some parts of the north eastern districts were very much above average, due to good falls in these areas during July.  Parts of the far south west received good June rainfall, also resulting in very much above average winter rainfall. Only the far north western districts bordering the Northern Territory recorded below average seasonal rainfall.

The winter period (June to August) saw some long term records broken, with several stations achieving their highest daily rainfall on record.   

From available figures, the highest rainfall for winter was recorded at Upper Springbrook with 572 mm, followed by Koombooloomba Alert with 490 mm, then Maroochydore Aero with 484 mm. The highest daily rainfall for winter was 192 mm recorded at Numimbah on the 3rd June.

Brisbane received 229 mm of rainfall in winter, where the long term average is 168 mm.

Temperature

Despite some rather cool weather in August, an average July and a warmer than usual June - winter temperatures were within a degree of the long term average for both maximum and minimum  temperatures. Some sites had their warmest winter night (highest daily minimum temperature) on record.

Brisbane received a mean maximum temperature of 21.7°C (+0.6°C above the long term average) and a mean minimum temperatures of 10.6°C (+0.3°C above the long term average).
