Details

Despite thunderstorms occurring over populated regions of the state, the first month of summer saw only the Central Highlands and far northern districts receiving above to very much above average rainfall while parts of the western and south-eastern districts received below average falls. In contrast, January saw most of the north of the state receive very much above average rainfall, with areas of highest on record in the north western districts. The start of January saw a low pressure system located over the NT linking to a monsoon trough over the Cape York Peninsula.Widespread rain and storms occurred over northern and north-west areas of the state, and the first flood warnings for the season were activated in the Gulf Rivers and the Georgina, Diamantina and Cooper.
By the 11th a low in the Gulf deepened into Tropical Cyclone Charlotte and tracked southeast, crossing the coast near the mouth of the Gilbert River early on the 12th, producing further heavy rainfall in the vicinity. Very heavy falls were recorded on the North Tropical Coast between Cape Tribulation and Babinda, which coincided with king tides along the coast, and led to major flooding in the Tully River, and inundated houses at Cairns and Townsville.
For the remainder of the month isolated showers and thunderstorms over the northern half of the state produced isolated heavy falls and further exacerbating existing flooding around the Gulf and over the Diamantina, Georgina and Cooper catchments. The start of February saw Tropical Cyclone Ellie develop east of Cairns, crossing near Cardwell just before midnight on the 1st February and bringing further flood producing rainfall to the east coast between Cardwell and Mackay. Another weak low on the monsoon trough to the east of Cairns developed on the 4th, drifted northwards with the monsoon trough, and produced further heavy rainfall on the North Tropical Coast between the 4th and 8th. This renewed rises to rivers already in flood.
While this rainfall eased on the North Tropical Coast, a band of moderate to heavy rainfall fell across the state from the far north west to Central Queensland on the 10th, causing renewed rises to inland rivers. From the 12th to 19th, much of the state was under the influence of low pressure, with the monsoon trough over the far north, a low south of Charleville extending northwards, another low travelling from St Lawrence in a southeast path towards New South Wales, and a surface trough lying off southern Queensland. Moderate to locally heavy rainfall was recorded over the eastern half of the state. The remainder of the month saw the monsoon trough situated over the north of the state, generating showers and thunderstorms, and some rain areas over the central and northern tropics.

Rainfall

Area-averaged across the state, the rainfall was 488.86 mm, which is the 6th highest on record based on figures since 1900. It is also the highest state averaged rainfall since the 1990/1991 summer.

The wettest overall was 3386 mm at Bulgun Creek Alert, followed by 3380.4 mm at Paluma Ivy Cottage, then 3192.7 mm at Hawkins Creek and then 3105 mm at Babinda Post Office.

Since the start of the year, Bulgun Creek Alert has received 3136 mm of rainfall, while Paluma Ivy Cottage has received 3117.8 mm (where the annual average is 2500 mm, and the combined January and February average is 1172 mm) and then Hawkins Creek with 3006.6 mm. Paluma Alert recorded 53 consecutive rain days from 27th December 2007 to 17th February 2009 (total of 2724 mm) while Mutarnee Store had 52 consecutive rain days from the 28th December 2007 to 17th February 2009 (total of 2171 mm).

The driest overall was 22.6 mm at Ballera Gas Field, followed by 65.6 mm at Hungerford.

Some sites had their highest total summer rainfall on record.

Some sites had their highest total summer rainfall for at least 20 years.

The wettest single day 497.0 mm at Hawkins Creek , followed by 467.0 mm at Cardwell Range both on 4 Feb 2009, followed by 436.2 mm at Cape Tribulation Store on 12 Jan 2009. These sites received more rainfall in one day, than Brisbane received for the entire summer (Brisbane city recorded 271.8 mm for summer). 

Some sites had their highest summer daily rainfall on record.

Temperature

Continuous rain over the north west kept temperatures well below average for the season, particularly daytime temperatures.

Preliminary figures for maximum temperatures show up to 2 - 4°C below the long term average over the far north west of the state, encompassing the Gulf, east to Hughenden and south of Mt Isa.. The broader area over the north west, roughly bound by a line from Bowen across to Birdsville, was also below average for the summer period. 

Minimum temperatures were mostly within a degree of average across the state, apart from the far north west, which was below average for summer. 

Maximum temperature

The hottest day was 46.3°C at Birdsville Airport on 4 Dec 2008, followed by 45.2°C at Ballera Gas Field on 5 Feb 2009, followed by 45.1°C at Bedourie Police Station on 26 Dec 2008.

The warmest days on average were 38.5°C at Ballera Gas Field, followed by 38.3°C at Birdsville Airport, followed by 37.8°C at Thargomindah Airport.

The coolest days on average were 26.2°C at Applethorpe, followed by 26.8°C at Maleny Tamarind St, followed by 26.9°C at Stanthorpe Leslie Parade.

The coldest day was 17.5°C at Stanthorpe Leslie Parade on 13 Feb 2009, followed by 18.0°C at Applethorpe on 13 Feb 2009, followed by 18.6°C at Toowoomba Airport on 13 Feb 2009.

Some sites had their coldest summer day (lowest maximum temperature) on record.

Some sites had their lowest summer mean daily maximum temperature for at least 20 years.

Minimum temperature

The coldest night was 7.0°C at Applethorpe on 1 Dec 2008, followed by 7.4°C at Stanthorpe Leslie Parade on 1 Dec 2008, followed by 8.0°C at Applethorpe on 16 Dec 2008.

The coolest nights on average were 14.6°C at Applethorpe, followed by 15.4°C at Stanthorpe Leslie Parade, followed by 16.4°C at Warwick.

The warmest nights on average were 26.5°C at Willis Island, followed by 26.0°C at Sweers Island, followed by 25.9°C at Coconut Island.

The warmest night was 31.7°C at Boulia Airport on 29 Dec 2008, followed by 31.5°C at Ballera Gas Field on 6 Feb 2009, followed by 31.1°C at Cloncurry Airport on 10 Dec 2008, followed by 31.1°C at Boulia Airport on 11 Dec 2008, followed by 31.1°C at Ballera Gas Field on 27 Dec 2008.

Wind

The strongest wind gust was 133 km/h at St George Airport on 26 Dec 2008, followed by 115 km/h at Lucinda Point on 13 Jan 2009, followed by 104 km/h at Lucinda Point on 12 Jan 2009.
