Rainfall
Averaged across the state the spring rainfall was 46.08 mm based on the area averaged data since 1900, this being rather dry with a ranking 21 of 110 and the lowest since 2006.
Rainfall has been below average over most of the state with large parts of the southeast, northwestern and far northern districts receiving less than 10 percent of their long term average spring rainfall. A severe 3-month rainfall deficiency exists through the northern Moreton and Port Curtis districts, part of the Central Highlands, in the far northwest corner of the state and over parts of Cape York Peninsula. A serious deficiency extends to the 12 month period in parts of the Port Curtis and Central Highlands districts.
Rainfall was close to average through the Central Lowlands and extending south through part of the Far South West and Warrego districts, and along the northeast tropical coast between Townsville and Cooktown. Bellenden Ker Top Station recorded 1521.6 mm, its highest spring rainfall since 1998.
An upper low pressure system brought widespread cloud and above average rainfall to southwest Queensland late in November and provided a respite from a long run of above average temperatures. The largest spring rainfall total recorded in Queensland was 1521.6 mm at Bellenden Ker Top Station (1303 mm in November), followed by 935 mm at Bellenden Ker Bottom Station (746.6 mm in November), followed by 657.1 mm at Babinda Post Office, 610.0 mm at Mt Sophia and 564.0 mm at Corsis Alert.
The driest overall was 0.2 mm at Coen Airport, followed by 2.0 mm at Georgetown Airport.
Some sites had their lowest total spring rainfall on record. Some sites had their lowest total spring rainfall for at least 20 years. The wettest single day occurred on the 31st of October, when Edward River recorded 206.5 mm of rainfall, followed by 196 mm at Bellenden Ker Bottom Station, 180.0 mm at Mt Sophia and 164.0 mm at Babinda Post Office, all on the 12th of November.

A strong front moved across southern and western Queensland during the 22nd and 23rd of September. Hot and gusty north-westerly winds preceded the system over southern Queensland and were replaced by a vigorous south to westerly stream that developed widespread duststorms over southern and western areas of the state. Many of the duststorms were severe with visibility reduced to below 200 metres.
An extended period of dry conditions in central Australia and western parts of Queensland and New South Wales provided an ample dust source that culminated in one of the biggest duststorm events in living memory. Satellite imagery depicted the magnitude of the dust extending across New South Wales and stretching north to the southeast Gulf of Carpentaria and Cape York and spreading across the northeast tropical coast on the 24th and 25th.
Another frontal passage on the 26th and 27th triggered duststorms again, particularly over western districts where the winds were stronger. This event was less dramatic but again brought widespread dust to the east coast.Wind
Thunderstorms triggered the peak wind gust during spring, though winds were strong during the duststorm event in September.
The strongest wind gust was 131 km/h at Double Island Point Lighthouse on the 30th of November, followed by 124 km/h at Richmond Airport on the 23rd of November, followed by 120 km/h at Weipa Aero on the 4th of October.

Flood Warnings which began on the 2nd of November continued until flood levels eased below the level of the Paroo River Bridge on the 12th of November
Bulloo River: Heavy rainfall produced minor flooding in the Bulloo River catchment with a peak of 4.4 metres recorded at Thargomindah during the afternoon of the 6th of November. Flood Warnings which began on the 5th of November were finalised on the 8th of November.Further information

Notes
A Seasonal Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Tuesday 1 December 2009. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
* A nearby long term station is used for comparison at these sites.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
