Autumn was wetter than usual in the south west, southern interior and parts of the Gulf Country. Maximum temperatures were generally cooler than average over the western half of the state, while the remainder of the state was slightly warmer than average. Minimum temperatures were cooler than average over southern districts, and warmer than average about the north tropical coast, central coast and Capricornia.
Some significant events that occurred in Queensland during autumn 2010 area below, along with links to individual reports for some of these events.March: Many stations in the south west districts recorded their highest daily rainfall for autumn. The most extreme falls occurred in far western Queensland on the 1st of March. Similarly heavy falls on the 2nd of March were recorded further east through much of the southern inland in the Warrego and Maranoa districts. The combination of a monsoon low over the western districts and another low just off the south east coast near Fraser Island caused the heavy, widespread rainfall and affected most the south west and southern districts at the beginning of March.
Widespread major flooding developed over the 2nd and 3rd of March on many southern inland rivers. Major flooding occurred in the Diamantina, Barcoo, and Cooper Creek, Bulloo, Paroo, Warrego, Wallam and Mungalla Creeks, Maranoa, Balonne, Condamine, Moonie, Weir and Dawson river catchments.
A Special Climate Statement is available for here.
April: Flooding from heavy rainfall earlier in the year continued until the 27th of April in the south west Queensland catchments of the Cooper, Diamantina, Eyre Creek and Balonne river systems.
On the north east tropical coast, Daintree Village and Cape Tribulation recorded 318 mm to 9am on the 4th, causing flooding in the Daintree River between the 4th and the 7th.
Ex tropical cyclone Paul, located over the south west Gulf of Carpentaria waters and coastal areas, concentrated heavy rainfall over the Cape York Peninsula and the Gulf Country, and initiated flooding in the Norman catchment from the 4th to the 17th, and in the Nicholson catchment from the 2nd to the 12th.
Detailed Reports on Notable Queensland Floods can be found here.
March: Severe tropical cyclone Ului made landfall near Airlie Beach on the Whitsunday Coast at approximately 1:30am on the 21st of March. Significant wind damage was reported around the Central Coast and Whitsundays district, mainly between Airlie Beach and Mackay. Reports of damage include widespread tree damage, large areas of sugarcane destroyed and localised structural damage, particularly to roofs. Many boats were also damaged or destroyed due to large seas and swell created by Ului, particularly around Shute Harbour near Airlie Beach. A report on severe tropical cyclone Ului can be found here.
April: Tropical cyclone Paul affected the north west Gulf of Carpentaria late in March. After weakening to a low it traveled across the southern Gulf waters bringing a deluge to the Gulf Country at the beginning of April. The heavy rainfall associated with Paul initiated flooding in the Norman and Nicholson river catchments. Several communities were isolated for long periods by floodwaters and the resulting damage to roads and airstrips. A report on tropical cyclone Paul can be found here.
The state wide average rainfall was 196.11 mm, which is above the long term average of 163.13 mm.
Overall, autumn rainfall was well above the long term seasonal average in the south west and southern districts, as well as in parts of the Gulf Country.
The south west and southern districts received the majority of the seasonal rain at the beginning of March, where heavy, widespread rainfall led to flooding in the southern inland rivers. Many stations located in this area broke long term daily rainfall records.
In the 24 hours to 9am on the 1st of March, the highest daily rainfall total in Queensland was 188 mm at Bedourie Police Station, followed by 168 mm at Birdsville Airport, and then 163 mm at Glengyle (all in the Lower Western district). These were all new annual extreme daily rainfall totals for these stations.
Parts of the Gulf Country were well above the seasonal average due to ex tropical cyclone Paul, located over south west Gulf of Carpentaria waters at the beginning of April. The highest rainfalls to 9am on the 2nd included 338.6 mm at Westmoreland Station, 250 mm at Kingfisher Camp, 235 mm at Burketown and 185 mm at Escott Station.
The wettest location was Bellenden Ker Top Station, with an autumn total of 3782 mm.The highest daily rainfall in autumn was 338.6 mm at Westmoreland Station on the 2nd of April.
See a map of total rainfall. See a map of rainfall deciles.Maximum temperatures were generally cooler than average over most of the state, while parts of the east coast and the Peninsula were slighly warmer than average.
Minimum temperatures were cooler than average over southern and south western districts, and warmer than average about the north tropical coast, Gulf Country and the western Peninsula. The remainder of the state was close to average.
The state wide average maximum temperature was 0.20 °C below the long term average of 29.50 °C for autumn 2010.
The hottest day was 39.1 °C at Julia Creek Airport on the 11th of April and the warmest days on average were 33.5 °C, also at Julia Creek Airport.
The coolest days on average were 21.3 °C at Applethorpe, and the coldest day was 11.1 °C at Applethorpe and Stanthorpe, both on the 30th of May. May.
See a map of mean maximum temperatures. See a map of maximum temperature anomalies. The state wide average minimum temperature was 0.21 °C above the long term average of 17.18 °C for autumn 2010.
A near stationary low pressure system near New Zealand produced a blocking pattern with a high pressure system situated about south eastern Australia that induced a deep, cool and dry southerly airflow over the southern half of the state. This pattern continued for several days with widespread morning frost areas about the southern inland area. The coldest daily minimum temperatures during autumn were all recorded at Stanthorpe, with -3.5 °C on the 14th of May, -3.0 °C on the 13th of May and -2.7 °C on the 15th of May.
The coolest nights on average were 9.9 °C at Applethorpe.
The warmest nights on average were 26.1 °C at Coconut Island, and the warmest night was 29.2 °C at Horn Island on the 3rd of March..

Details Extremes Maps Records Summaries Important notes the top
A Seasonal Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Tuesday 1 June 2010. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 9 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
