Queensland in summer 2010-11: Wet Summer

Summary

Almost the entire state received average or above average rainfall during the 2010 - 2011 summer, except for a small area over the southern interior which was below average. Parts of the southeast inland areas received record high summer rainfall while 37% of the state, over the eastern, southwestern and northwestern districts had very much above average, this being the highest 10% on record. The state-averaged rainfall total for this summer was 509.45 mm, well above the long-term seasonal average of 324.68 mm. This figure ranked the sixth highest state-averaged seasonal rainfall total on record, ranking below the 2008-2009 summer figure of 519.91 mm.

The seasonal mean maximum temperatures were cooler than the averages for most parts of the state. The state-wide averaged seasonal maximum temperature was -0.97 °C below the long-term (1961-1990) average 34.64 °C and 11th lowest on the record since the area-averaged data set began in 1950. 

The seasonal mean minimum temperatures were slightly above the means over the southern and eastern districts, while just below the means over the central interior region and the western districts. The state-wide averaged seasonal minimum temperature was very close, just 0.06 °C above, the long-term state average of 22.31 °C.

Overview

December:

It was the wettest December on record and the state wide averaged rainfall amount was more than double the long term 1961 to 1990 baseline mean. Following very extensive and heavy rainfall periods during the 2010 spring, river catchments were overwhelmed by further rainfall in December that culminated in one of the most widespread and significant floods over the southern and central catchments. Theodore and Condamine were fully evacuated and 22 towns and over 200,000 people were affected. Forty-one local government areas were disaster declared with significant disruption to mining and agriculture and other industries, expected to cost many hundreds of millions of dollars.

Queensland's first cyclone of the 2010/11season, Tasha, formed early on Christmas morning near Agincourt Reef to the east of Cairns and crossed the coast about 5:30 am south of Cairns between the townships of Gordonvale and Babinda. It was a weak category one system but brought significant rain to a broad area of northern Queensland.

Severe thunderstorms with large hail had been triggered by a deep trough system over the southeast near the mid-month.

January:

January total rainfall was very much above average (decile 10) over parts of the Far Southwest district, the far west, Cape York Peninsula, the Upper Carpentaria, the Darling Downs and most of the Moreton South Coast district, with some places receiving their highest rainfall on record.

This extremely wet period from late November 2010 to mid January 2011 contributed to widespread flooding of many Queensland rivers.  During the second week of January severe flooding (including river and flash flooding) occurred in Brisbane and nearby areas of southeast Queensland.  For more information see SCS 24, pages 7, 8 and 9.

TC Anthony crossed the coast near Bowen on the 30th of January.

February:

Most areas over western Queensland were above or very much above the February average, while most parts over the southeast and the central inlands were below.

Severe Tropical Cyclone (TC) Yasi (marginal Category 5) made landfall on the southern tropical coast near Mission Beach between midnight to 1 am early on 3rd February. Severe TC Yasi maintained a strong core with damaging winds and heavy rain, tracking westwards across the north of the state and finally weakened to a tropical low near Mount Isa around 10pm on the 3rd February.

The remnants of Ex-TC Anthony, as a low, weakened, moved rapidly and reached the southwest corner of the state during the first two days of the month. Rain and thunderstorms, with moderate falls, dominated the southwest of the state during the period.

Rainfall

The wettest overall was at Bellenden Ker Top Stn with 4512.8 mm, followed by Bellenden Ker Bottom Stn with 3225.6 mm, then Babinda Post Office with 2676.8 mm.

The driest overall was at Wallen with 61.8 mm, followed by South Plains with 94.6 mm, then Mulga Downs with 97.4 mm.

Some sites had their highest total summer rainfall on record. Some sites had their highest total summer rainfall for at least 20 years.

The wettest single day was at Hawkins Creek with 464.0 mm on 3 Feb 2011, followed by Maleny Denning Rd with 350.0 mm on 10 Jan 2011, then Happy Valley with 339.0 mm on 25 Dec 2010.

Temperature

The warmest on average was Birdsville Airport with 32.2 °C, followed by Julia Creek Airport with 29.8 °C, then The Monument Airport with 29.8 °C.

The coolest on average was Applethorpe with 20.1 °C, followed by Stanthorpe Leslie Parade with 20.8 °C, then Toowoomba Airport with 21.5 °C.

Maximum temperature

The hottest day was at Birdsville Airport with 47.4 °C on 27 Jan 2011, followed by Bedourie Police Station with 47.0 °C on 27 Jan 2011, then Birdsville Airport again with 46.1 °C on 28 Jan 2011.

The warmest days on average were at Birdsville Airport with 39.1 °C, followed by Bedourie Police Station with 39.0 °C, then Boulia Airport with 37.8 °C.

The coolest days on average were at Applethorpe with 25.0 °C, followed by Maleny Tamarind St with 25.6 °C, then Toowoomba Airport with 25.7 °C.

The top 3 coldest day all happened at Applethorpe with 16.5 °C on 19 Dec 2010, followed by 17.5 °C on 3 Dec 2010, then 17.8 °C on 4 Dec 2010.

Minimum temperature

The coldest night was at Applethorpe with 3.7 °C on 21 Dec 2010, followed by Stanthorpe Leslie Parade with 4.5 °C on 21 Dec 2010, then Warwick with 6.5 °C on 21 Dec 2010.

The coolest nights on average were at Applethorpe with 15.2 °C, followed by Stanthorpe Leslie Parade with 15.8 °C, then Warwick with 17.2 °C.

The warmest nights on average were at Sweers Island with 25.7 °C, followed by Coconut Island with 25.6 °C, then Birdsville Airport with 25.3 °C.

The warmest night was at Thargomindah Airport with 31.8 °C on 28 Jan 2011, followed by Birdsville Airport with 31.5 °C on 28 Jan 2011, then Birdsville Airport with 30.8 °C on 8 Jan 2011.

Wind

The strongest wind gust was at Willis Island with 206 km/h on 2 Feb 2011, followed by Lucinda Point with 185 km/h on 2 Feb 2011, then South Johnstone Exp Stn with 130 km/h on 3 Feb 2011.
