Queensland in autumn 2011: A Wetter and Cooler Autumn

• Above average rainfall across most parts of the state
• More than half of the state received very much above average (Decile 10) rainfall
• Seventh wettest autumn for the state-wide average rainfall
• Wettest autumn since 1990
• Cooler than seasonal averages for both daily and nightly temperatures, less marked in coastal areas
• Coldest autumn for the state-averaged daily mean temperature
• Fifth coldest autumn for the state-averaged maximum daily temperatures
• Fourth coldest autumn for the state-averaged minimum daily temperatures

Summary

During this autumn, most parts of the state received near or above average rainfall. Only a small area near the southern border was drier than average. Parts of the Gulf Country and Southwestern Districts received record high autumn rainfall whilst about 43% of the state, over the western, tropical region, the central coast and its inland parts, had very much above average, this being the highest 10% on record. The state-averaged rainfall total for this autumn was 280.9 mm which was well above the long-term seasonal average of 163.1 mm. This figure ranked the 7th highest state-averaged seasonal rainfall total on the record since the area-averaged data set began in 1950 and also ranked the wettest autumn since 1990 which was the wettest on record.

The state-wide averaged seasonal mean temperature was 1.27 °C below the long-term (1961-1990) average of 23.34 °C. This figure ranked the coldest state-averaged autumn daily mean temperature on the record since the area-averaged data set began in 1950.

The seasonal mean maximum temperatures were cooler than average for most parts of the state, except the North Tropical Coast area, Wide Bay area and a small area near the southern border. The averaged daily maximum temperatures over the east coast region were less than 1 °C cooler than the seasonal means while the western and central interior parts were 2 to 4 °C cooler. The state-wide averaged seasonal maximum temperature was 1.23 °C below the long-term (1961-1990) average of 29.50 °C. This figure ranked the 5th coldest state-averaged autumn daily maximum temperature on the record since the area-averaged data set began in 1950 and was the coldest since 1971 (ranked 3rd).

The seasonal mean minimum temperatures were also below the long-term means for most parts of the state, apart from the southeast corner of the state and a small part of the Northern Tropical Coast. The averaged daily minimum temperatures over the east coastal districts were up to 1 °C below the seasonal average figures while the western and the interior districts were 1 to 4 °C cooler than means. The state-wide averaged seasonal minimum temperature was just 1.31 °C below the long-term state average of 17.18 °C. This figure is ranked equally 4th coldest state-averaged autumn daily minimum temperature on the record with 1953 autumn and was the coldest since 2008 (ranked 2nd).

Flooding

Prolonged flooding occurred during March across the numerous catchments within the Fitzroy River basin, across Western Queensland including the Condamine and Balonne Rivers, and across the Gulf River catchments. 

Heavy rain between the 18th and the 19th of April caused flooding over the Roma area.

Rainfall

The wettest overall was Bellen Den Ker Top with 2537.4 mm, followed by Bingil Bay with 2031.6 mm, then Paluma Ivy Cottage with 1837.3 mm.

The driest overall was Balmacarra with 16.6 mm.

Some sites had their highest total autumn rainfall on record. Some sites had their highest total autumn rainfall for at least 20 years. Some sites had their lowest total autumn rainfall for at least 20 years.

The wettest single day was at Mornington Island with 477.2 mm on 1 Mar, followed by Kamaran Downs with 360.6 mm on 6 Mar, then Wilson Beach with 358.2 mm on 31 Mar.

Temperature

The warmest on average (average of maximum plus minimum temperatures) was Coconut Island with 28.5 °C, followed by Horn Island with 27.6 °C, then Scherger RAAF with 27.2 °C.

The coolest on average was Applethorpe with 14.7 °C, followed by Stanthorpe Leslie Parade with 15.3 °C, then Toowoomba Airport with 17.3 °C.

Maximum temperature

The hottest day was at Birdsville Airport with 41.9 °C, followed by Bedourie Police Station with 40.5 °C, then Cunnamulla Post Office with 40.2 °C all on the 1 Mar.

The warmest days on average were at Scherger RAAF with 32.0 °C, followed by Coconut Island with 31.8 °C, then Weipa Aero with 31.7 °C.

The coolest days on average were at Applethorpe with 19.9 °C, followed by Stanthorpe Leslie Parade with 20.8 °C, then Toowoomba Airport with 21.7 °C.

The coldest day was at Applethorpe with 9.4 °C on the 25 May, followed by Stanthorpe Leslie Parade with 10.4 °C on the same day, then Miles Constance Street with 11.3 °C on 31 May.

Some sites had their coldest autumn day (lowest maximum temperature) on record. Some sites had their lowest autumn mean daily maximum temperature on record. Minimum temperature

The coldest night was at Applethorpe with -2.8 °C on the 15 May, followed by Stanthorpe Leslie Parade with -2.0 °C on the same day, then Stanthorpe Leslie Parade with -1.9 °C on 16 May.

The coolest nights on average were at Applethorpe with 9.5 °C, followed by Stanthorpe Leslie Parade with 9.8 °C, then Tambo Post Office with 11.3 °C.

The warmest nights on average were at Coconut Island with 25.2 °C, followed by Willis Island with 24.9 °C, then Horn Island with 24.8 °C.

The warmest night was at Birdsville Airport with 28.2 °C on 2 Mar, followed by Willis Island with 27.7 °C on 24 Mar, then Willis Island with 27.6 °C on 6 Mar, 22 Mar and 23 Mar.

Some sites had their lowest autumn temperature on record. Some sites had their lowest autumn mean daily minimum temperature on record. Wind

The strongest wind gust was at Cape Moreton Lighthouse with 102 km/h on 5 Mar, followed by 94 km/h at both Cape Moreton Lighthouse and Double Island Point Lighthouse on 6 Mar, then by 91 km/h at both Cape Moreton Lighthouse on 27 Mar and at Hamilton Island Airport on 26 Apr.
