Queensland in summer 2011-12: Cool nights, average to above average rainfall

Monthly summary
- December 2011 was a very cool month, with 77% of the state having below average to lowest on record mean temperatures (the exceptions being the coastal northern districts and south and west channel country)
- January 2012 had a hot start and a wet finish, with only 10% of the state receiving below average rainfall (around 44% above average)
- February 2012 had cool nights and average rainfall, with the state averaged third lowest minimum temperature on record (64% of the state received both below average (and less) minimum temperatures, as well as average rainfall)
Rainfall
The Queensland area averaged rainfall was 377 mm. Most of the above average rainfall occurred south of the Northern Goldfields & Upper Flinders district to the border, as well as the Wide Bay & Burnett and Southeast Coast districts.
The wettest overall was Halifax Macrossan St with 1592.9 mm, followed by Cardwell Range with 1537.4 mm, followed by Halifax Alert with 1491.0 mm.
The driest overall was the Ballera Gas Field with 34.8 mm.
Some sites had their highest total summer rainfall on record. Some sites had their highest total summer rainfall for at least 20 years. The warmest on average was Birdsville Airport with 31.4 °C, followed by Boulia Airport with 31.4 °C, followed by Bedourie Police Station with 30.5 °C, followed by Camooweal Township with 30.2 °C.
The coolest on average was Applethorpe with 19.1 °C, followed by Toowoomba Airport with 21.0 °C, followed by Maleny Tamarind St with 21.6 °C.
Maximum temperature
The Queensland area averaged maximum temperature (see notes section) was 0.74 °C below the long-term average of 34.6 °C (1961-1990).
The hottest day was at Birdsville Airport with 47.5 °C on 7 Jan 2012, followed by Ballera Gas Field with 45.6 °C on 7 Jan 2012, followed by Windorah Post Office with 45.6 °C on 7 Jan 2012, followed by Urandangi with 45.3 °C on 5 Feb 2012.
The warmest days on average were at Birdsville Airport with 38.7 °C, followed by Urandangi with 38.6 °C, followed by Boulia Airport with 38.5 °C.
The coolest days on average were at Applethorpe with 24.2 °C, followed by Maleny Tamarind St with 25.2 °C, followed by Toowoomba Airport with 25.5 °C.

A Seasonal Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Thursday 1 March 2012. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 9 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Please note that the rainfall data from telemetry gauges (those with ALERT, AL or TM in their names) may be from non-Bureau owned stations and includes real-time operational data from automated systems and has not been checked.
