Queensland in autumn 2012: A wet cool autumn

Monthly summary 

• March 2012 was cold and wet across the state, with the 8th coolest maximum temperature on record (since 1950), 7th wettest March on record (since 1900) and cooler than average minimum temperatures
• April 2012 had average temperatures and rainfall with most of the state recording average temperatures, however, around one third experienced below average minimum temperatures. Most of the state recorded average rainfall
• May 2012 was wet in the north and cool nights mostly in the south. Over half of the state recorded above average rainfall and around 68% of the state experienced cooler nights 
  

Rainfall

The Queensland area averaged rainfall was 240 mm.

The wettest overall was 5259.6 mm at Bellenden Ker Top, followed by Babinda Post Office with 2284.6 mm, followed by Mt Sophia with 2112.0 mm, followed by Tung Oil Alert with 2064.0 mm.

Some sites had their highest total autumn rainfall on record. Some sites had their highest total autumn rainfall for at least 20 years.

The wettest single day was at Mount Jukes with 388.0 mm on 21 Mar, followed by Paluma Ivy Cottage with 366.0 mm on 20 Mar, followed by Daradgee with 342.2 mm on 26 Mar.

Some sites had their highest autumn daily rainfall on record.

Temperature

The Queensland area averaged mean temperature (see notes section) was -0.71 °C below the long-term average of 23.3 °C (1961-1990).

The warmest on average was Coconut Island with 28.5 °C, followed by Horn Island with 27.6 °C, followed by Weipa Aero with 27.1 °C, followed by Willis Island with 27.1 °C.

The coolest on average was Applethorpe with 15.1 °C, followed by Stanthorpe Leslie Parade with 15.4 °C, followed by Jimna Forestry with 17.2 °C.

Maximum temperature

The Queensland area averaged maximum temperature (see notes section) was -0.59 °C below the long-term average of 29.5 °C (1961-1990).

The hottest day was at Birdsville Airport with 40.9 °C on 3 Apr, followed by Bedourie Police Station with 39.9 °C on 3 Apr, followed by Birdsville Airport with 39.8 °C on 2 Apr.

The warmest days on average were at Century Mine with 32.1 °C, followed by Burketown Airport with 32.0 °C, followed by Camooweal Township with 31.9 °C.

The coolest days on average were at Applethorpe with 21.1 °C, followed by Stanthorpe Leslie Parade with 21.8 °C, followed by Toowoomba Airport with 22.0 °C.

The coldest day was at Applethorpe with 11.9 °C on 25 May, followed by Applethorpe with 12.3 °C on 26 May, followed by Stanthorpe Leslie Parade with 13.0 °C on 25 May, followed by Tambo Post Office with 13.0 °C on 25 May.

Some sites had their coldest autumn day (lowest maximum temperature) on record. Some sites had their lowest autumn mean daily maximum temperature for at least 20 years.

Minimum temperature

The Queensland area averaged minimum temperature (see notes section) was -0.84 °C below the long-term average of 17.2 °C (1961-1990).

The coldest night was at Oakey Aero with -3.2 °C on 15 May, followed by Stanthorpe Leslie Parade with -3.0 °C on 15 May, followed by Warwick with -3.0 °C on 15 May, followed by Roma Airport with -2.9 °C on 16 May.

The coolest nights on average were at Applethorpe with 9.0 °C, followed by Stanthorpe Leslie Parade with 9.1 °C, followed by Oakey Aero with 10.1 °C, followed by Roma Airport with 10.1 °C.

The warmest nights on average were at Coconut Island with 25.7 °C, followed by Willis Island with 25.1 °C, followed by Horn Island with 24.9 °C.

The warmest night was at Sweers Island with 27.9 °C on 6 Mar, followed by Sweers Island with 27.9 °C on 6 Apr, followed by Willis Island with 27.7 °C on 3 Mar, followed by Coconut Island with 27.7 °C on 19 Mar, followed by Willis Island with 27.6 °C on 1 Mar.

Wind
