Queensland in summer 2012-13 - Warm and extreme rainfall in parts

• 4th highest maximum temperature on record, warmest since 2005/2006
• 4th highest mean temperature on record,  warmest since 2005/2006
• Wetter than average in south east corner of the state, extending north up to the Central Coast and west into Maranoa and Warrego districts
• 100 daily rainfall records broken
• Below average rainfall across remainder of state, well below average in far north, parts of the interior and western districts
  
• Area averaged rainfall was 255.17 mm, lowest since 2005/2006

Monthly Summary

        December 2012: Dry and warm

• Around half of the state recorded below average rainfall, with the area averaged rainfall being the lowest since 2005.
• No where in the state was below average for maximum temperatures, with the maximum temperature anomaly being the 5th highest on record.
• Around 59% of the state recorded above average minimum temperatures (see decile map) with around 36% below average (mainly near the coast).
• There were 16 record low rainfall stations (47 lowest for at least 20 years) and 10 temperature records broken.

        January 2013: Extreme heat in the west and extreme rainfall and flooding on the coast

• Refer to Special Climate Statements 43 and 44.
  
• The national heatwave continued, including parts of western QLD (see SCS-43)
• Except for localised heavy falls on the Darling Downs and tropical regions north of Townsville, most of the region affected by the extreme rainfall in the last week of January (see SCS-44), had less than 50 mm in the first three weeks of January, with some locations in the north of the state approaching record low rainfall up until the 22nd
• Despite the wet finish to the month for coastal areas, QLD ended up having its hottest January on record and lowest area averaged rainfall since 2003 
• A new QLD January temperature record of 49.0 °C, the state’s highest temperature since December 1972, was set at Birdsville
• Birdsville had a run of 31 consecutive days of 40 °C or above, a site record and the equal-longest such run on record for Queensland
• There were a total of 16 temperature records broken
• The mean rainfall for QLD was slightly above normal (2.6%), making it 10 years in a row
• Ex-TC Oswald moved south and produced the most extreme rainfall in the region between Rockhampton and Bundaberg, and in the ranges along the NSW/QLD border
• Gladstone had 819.8 mm in 4 days, which exceeds its previous record for a whole month, and is also more than they had in the calendar years of 2011 or 2012
• Area-averaged rainfall for the Burnett catchment on 27 January was 204.1 mm, exceeding the previous record by more than 80 mm
• One-day catchment rainfall records were also set for the Mary, Logan-Albert, Kolan and Burrum catchments
• Area-averaged rainfall for the Brisbane River catchment was very similar to that in the 2011 event (slightly higher than 2011 for periods of 1 and 2 days, slightly lower for periods of 3 and 4 days)
• In the Bremer catchment rainfall totals ranked second behind 1974, and ahead of 2011
• There were a total of 53 daily rainfall and 28 monthly rainfall records for January

        February 2013: Dry in the north and central interior - wet in the south east and western interior

• Wetter than normal across the south east of the state, and parts of the western interior
• Drier than usual across the north and much of the central interior
  
• Average conditions for the remainder of the state
  
• There were 13 temperature records broken
• There were 2 rainfall records broken (where observations have been taken for greater than 20 years)
• Cooler than normal maximum temperatures over southern half of the state, warmer than average in the north west
• Cooler than normal minimum temperatures across most of the state, apart from the far northern districts
  

Rainfall

The Queensland area averaged rainfall was 255.17 mm.

The wettest overall was Bellenden Ker Top Stn with 1973.0 mm and then Springbrook Road with 1698.5 mm.

Some sites had their highest total summer rainfall on record. Some sites had their highest total summer rainfall for at least 20 years. Some sites had their lowest total summer rainfall on record. Some sites had their lowest total summer rainfall for at least 20 years.

The wettest single day was Numinbah with 653.0 mm on 28 Jan 2013, followed by Pacific Heights with 556.6 mm on 25 Jan 2013.

Some sites had their highest summer daily rainfall on record.

Temperature

The Queensland area averaged mean temperature (see notes section) was 1.09 °C above the long-term average of 28.48 °C  (1961-1990). The 4th highest on record.

The warmest on average was Birdsville Airport with 33.2 °C, followed by Urandangi Aerodrome with 33.1 °C, followed by Cloncurry Airport with 32.5 °C.

The coolest on average was Applethorpe with 20.9 °C, followed by Stanthorpe Leslie Parade with 21.3 °C, followed by Toowoomba Airport with 22.3 °C.

Maximum temperature

The Queensland area averaged maximum temperature (see notes section) was 1.58 °C above the long-term average of 34.64 °C (1961-1990). The 4th highest on record.

The hottest day was at Birdsville Airport with 49.0 °C on 13 Jan 2013, followed by Thargomindah Airport with 48.8 °C on 13 Jan 2013, followed by Birdsville Airport with 48.6 °C on 12 Jan 2013.

The warmest days on average were at Urandangi Aerodrome with 41.4 °C, followed by Birdsville Airport with 40.9 °C, followed by Boulia Airport with 40.8 °C.

The coolest days on average were at Applethorpe with 26.4 °C, followed by Maleny Tamarind St with 26.7 °C, followed by Stanthorpe Leslie Parade with 26.9 °C.

The coldest day was at Toowoomba Airport with 19.7 °C on 25 Feb 2013, followed by Jimna Forestry with 19.9 °C on 18 Feb 2013, followed by Applethorpe with 20.0 °C on 18 Feb 2013.

Some sites had their highest summer temperature on record. Some sites had their highest summer mean daily maximum temperature on record. Some sites had their highest summer mean daily maximum temperature for at least 20 years.

Minimum temperature

The Queensland area averaged minimum temperature (see notes section) was 0.61 °C above the long-term average of 22.31 °C (1961-1990). The highest since 2005/2006.

The coldest night was at Stanthorpe Leslie Parade with 5.5 °C on 6 Dec 2012, followed by Applethorpe with 6.2 °C on 6 Dec 2012, followed by Oakey Aero with 7.3 °C on 6 Dec 2012.

The coolest nights on average were at Applethorpe with 15.3 °C, followed by Stanthorpe Leslie Parade with 15.8 °C, followed by Warwick with 17.1 °C.

The warmest nights on average were at Sweers Island with 27.3 °C, followed by Mornington Island with 26.6 °C, followed by Coconut Island with 26.1 °C.

The warmest night was at Bedourie Police Station with 34.1 °C on 14 Jan 2013, followed by Thargomindah Airport with 33.1 °C on 9 Jan 2013, followed by Ballera Gas Field with 32.6 °C on 19 Jan 2013.

Some sites had their lowest summer temperature on record.

Wind

The strongest wind gust was at Cape Moreton Lighthouse with 128 km/h on 27 Jan 2013 and again on 28 Jan 2013, followed by Double Island Point Lighthouse with 122 km/h on 27 Jan 2013, followed by Blackall Airport with 120 km/h on 14 Jan 2013.
