Queensland in winter 2019: dry in southern half of the State; warm days in the southeast

Winter rainfall was below to well below average across much of the southern and far western parts of the State. Mean maximum temperatures were warmer than usual across the southern half of the State and much warmer than average in the southeastern quarter of Queensland. Overnight temperatures were generally close to average, but warmer than usual in the Gulf Country, and pockets of the southeast.

For the year-to-date, rainfall is above average in the northern tropics and parts of central Queensland, and below average in the southeastern quarter of the State. Areas of lowest on record persist in the southern Darling Downs. Year-to-date temperatures for Queensland are a degree or more warmer than average for mean, maximum and minimum temperatures, with record warm days in the southeast and southern Darling Downs also persisting.

  • Southern parts of the Central West, the Warrego and Maranoa, the Darling Downs and Granite Belt, and areas in the Wide Bay and Burnett districts have reported winter rainfall in the lowest 10% of historical records, with some locations recording their driest winter on record
  • Rainfall in June was below to well below average across much of the Warrego and Maranoa, parts of the east coast and far north of the State
  • July was drier than average in the southeast, and some areas of the Darling Downs experienced the driest July since the 1970s
  • August continued to be drier than usual across the southern half of the State, resulting in a much drier than usual winter
  • Some sites had their driest winter on record or in several decades

Warmer than usual daytime temperatures in the southeast

  • For Queensland as a whole, the mean maximum temperature was 0.88 °C above average
  • Queensland's mean minimum temperature was 0.72 °C above average, and the State's overall mean temperature was 0.80 °C warmer than average
  • Mean maximum temperatures for winter were warmer than average across the southern half of Queensland, and much warmer than average in the greater southeast of the State, with a few sites reporting their highest winter mean daily maximum temperature on record
  • June mean maximum temperatures were warmer than average in pockets of the southeast
  • This was followed by July mean maximum temperatures in the southeast that were the warmest on record
  • August mean maximum temperatures were warmer than average along most of the east coast, and the southeastern quarter of the State
  • Mean minimum temperatures for winter were generally close to average; pockets of warmer than usual nights in the southeast and northwest, while cooler than usual nights were recorded in the southwest and the southern border regions with the Northern Territory
  • June saw parts of the southern, central and western interiors receive cooler than average nights overall, but warmer than usual nights were recorded along the southeast coast
  • In July, overnight temperatures were warmer than usual in the northwest and southern inland districts, and close to average across the rest of the State
  • Mean maximum temperatures remained warmer than average into August

Fires

  • Multiple hazard reduction burns took place across the State in August, with numerous smoke alerts issued by Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES)
  • A bushfire burnt at the northern end of Bribie Island on the 21st
  • Fire crews fought fires at Noosa Heads, where a bushfire came metres from homes on the 23rd
  • On the same day, a fire burnt at Dunwich in North Stradbroke Island

Snow and frost

  • Light snowfall was observed on 4 June, with snow settling in areas around the southern Darling Downs, including at Stanthorpe and Eukey
  • Widespread frost over the southern interior on 21 and 22 June

Fog and dust

  • Fog at the Brisbane airport overnight on 15 and into the morning of 16 June, with visibility dropping to less than 100 m
  • Heavy fog blanketed much of Greater Brisbane on the morning of 19 August, with low-lying cloud spreading as far west to the Lockyer Valley and Scenic Rim
  • Hours after the fog lifted on 19 August, much of inner Brisbane was then blanketed in a dust cloud, originating from the southern inland from winds behind a cold front

Notes

The Seasonal climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 12 pm on Sunday 1 September 2019. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
