South Australia in Summer 2006-07
Above Average Rain, Some Flooding in the North

Summary

South Australia's summer was generally warmer than average, particularly through February. Areas of the state received above average rainfall, chiefly from a widespread January rain event which produced some flooding.

Rainfall

South Australian summer rainfall was mostly average to above average, with very much above average totals over central and northeast areas of the state, mainly due to widespread rainfall in mid to late January, producing some local flooding in the mid-North of the State. Isolated small areas of below and very much below average were confined to coastal parts of the Western Agricultural districts, the northwest corner of the state and a small pocket east of Marree.

Summer rainfall totals in excess of 100 mm were reported from many stations in all districts, except Kangaroo Island and the Adelaide Plains districts where all totals were below 50mm. Much of the Far North, Western Agricultural and Yorke Peninsula districts recorded totals below 50mm.

The remaining districts of the State reported totals mainly in the range 50 to 100mm.

The highest summer rainfall in the State was 211 mm at Hawker, in the Upper North district.

Some sites had their highest total summer rainfall for at least 20 years.

Some sites had their lowest total summer rainfall for at least 20 years.

See a map of total rainfall. See a map of rainfall deciles.

Temperature

Above average to very much above average temperatures were experienced across the State this Summer. Mean maximum temperatures were as much as 3 °C above average, and mean minimum temperatures as much as 2°C above average. This was particularly the case during February when maximum temperatures were as much as 5 to 6 degrees above average in the north and west.

Some sites had their highest summer temperature on record.

Some sites had their highest summer mean daily maximum temperature on record.

See a map of mean maximum temperatures. See a map of maximum temperature anomalies.

Notes

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Thursday 8 March 2007. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Normals are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of "normal" rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, normal in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of normal shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.
