South Australia in Autumn 2007
A Wet and Warm Autumn

Summary

Much of the State experienced above average rainfall and above average temperatures for autumn.

Mean maximum and mean minimum temperatures were 1°C to 3°C above normal across most of the state throughout autumn, with records being set at many locations.

Rainfall

Pastoral Districts

Rainfall was average to above average across the north and east of the Pastoral Districts during autumn, with areas abutting the north agricultural districts reporting totals that were very much above average.

Rainfall totals over 100 mm were confined to several stations in the Northwest Pastoral and Far North districts with Moonaree recording the highest autumn total with 130 mm. Totals between 60 and 100 mm were confined to the southern parts of the Northwest Pastoral district and isolated pockets in the remaining pastoral districts. Totals between 40 and 60 mm were confined to most of the North East Pastoral district and parts of the Far North district. Totals below 40 mm were confined to the boundary region of the Far North and Northwest Pastoral districts.

Lake Everard reported its highest autumn rainfall on record with 120 mm

Agricultural Districts

Rainfall totals were generally above to very much above average over much of the Agricultural Districts during autumn. Average rainfall totals were confined to coastal parts of the Lower Murray Basin and the Upper and Lower Southeast districts and also isolated pockets on the eastern Eyre Peninsula and the Lower North near Port Pirie.

Rainfall totals over 300 mm were confined to the higher parts of the Mount Lofty Ranges district and the western end of Kangaroo Island. Ashton recorded 346 mm and nearby Uraidla recorded 331 mm, both in the Mount Lofty Ranges district. The remainder of the Mount Lofty Ranges reported rainfall totals mostly between 200 mm and 300 mm. Isolated stations across the Lower North, Yorke Peninsula, Adelaide Plains and County Light recorded totals over 200 mm. Rainfall totals between 100 and 200 mm were confined to the Western Agricultural, Upper North, Murray Mallee, Flats and Lower Basin and the Upper and Lower Southeast. The Riverland district reported totals mostly below 100 mm.

Some sites had their highest total autumn rainfall on record.

See a map of total rainfall. See a map of rainfall deciles.

Temperature

Both mean maximum and mean minimum temperatures were up to 3°C above average across the state reducing to near average in the west. This has resulted in record high mean maximum temperatures at several locations in southern coastal areas of the state, and record high mean minimum temperatures at many locations extending across the centre of the state.

The hottest autumn day was 44.6°C at Oodnadatta on the 2nd of March, and the coldest was at Mount Crawford on the 21st May when a maximum of 10.6°C was recorded. Marree had the warmest autumn mean maximum temperature of 30.7°C.

Some sites had their highest autumn temperature on record.

Some sites had their highest autumn mean daily maximum temperature on record.

See a map of mean maximum temperatures. See a map of maximum temperature anomalies.

Some sites had their highest autumn mean daily minimum temperature on record.

Notes

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 2 pm on Friday 1 June 2007. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Normals are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of "normal" rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, normal in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of normal shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.
