Hot Start to Autumn followed by Average Conditions.

Summary

  • A record heatwave (15 consecutive days in excess of 35°C) occurred between the 3rd and 17th of March.
  • Overall, the autumn of 2008 in metropolitan Adelaide was warmer than normal.
  • Significant rain fell in the 24 hours to 9am on the 17th May, 27.0 mm.
  • The average maximum temperatures, recorded in the metropolitan area, were mostly between 1.5°C and 2.0°C above the long-term average for the season, whilst the average minimum temperatures was less than 1.0°C above the long-term average.
  • Rainfall across the metropolitan Adelaide during the autumn was mostly average.

Rainfall

Autumn rainfall across the metropolitan area was mostly near average. The South Australian Regional Office, Adelaide (Kent Town), recorded 124.8 mm, which is the normal rainfall for autumn at Kent Town. Last year 152.0 mm was recorded for autumn.

The lowest autumn rainfall total on record for the South Australian Regional Office, Kent Town, is 23.0 mm in 2005. The highest autumn rainfall total at Kent Town is 281.2 mm in 1983.

The wettest location in the Adelaide metropolitan area during the autumn of 2008 was in the eastern suburb of Golden Grove with 156.0 mm.

Temperature

The mean maximum temperature, recorded at the South Australian Regional Office (Kent Town), for autumn 2008 was 24.4°C, which is 1.8°C above the average autumn mean maximum of 22.6°C. The mean maximum for autumn last year was 24.0°C.

The hottest day during autumn was recorded at Edinburgh RAAF with 40.9°C on the 13th March. Noarlunga recorded the coolest day during autumn with 14.1°C on the 27th April.

Parafield Airport recorded the warmest days on average with 24.9°C with the coolest days on average of 23.3°C at Noarlunga.

Adelaide Airport recorded its highest autumn mean daily maximum temperature of 23.8°C.

The mean minimum temperature for autumn 2008 was 13.4°C at the South Australian Regional Office (Kent Town), which is 0.8°C above the average autumn mean minimum of 12.6°C. Last autumn the mean minimum was 14.2°C.

The coldest night during autumn was recorded at Parafield Airport with 4.3°C on the 29th May. Kent Town recorded the warmest night during autumn with 30.2°C on the 14th March.

The coolest nights on average, 12.1°C, were recorded at Parafield Airport whilst the warmest nights on average were at the Noarlunga site of 14.1°C

An overnight minimum temperature of 30.2°C is a new highest autumn daily minimum temperature recorded at Kent Town on the 14th March, 0.5°C above the previous record that occurred in 1985.

Some sites had their highest autumn mean daily maximum temperature on record.

Some sites had their warmest autumn night (highest daily minimum temperature) on record.
