Details Extremes Maps Records Summaries Important notes the top
Rainfall totals were above average to well above average in the northeast this winter. Most of the rest of South Australia ended up with near average winter rainfall, though some areas in the northern agricultural districts were slightly below average for winter rainfall this year.
Winter started with below average June rainfall around the state, tending above average in the north through July, and above average to well above average extending throughout much of the state during August.
Growing season rainfall (April to October) across the state to the end of August is above average across most of the pastoral districts of the state, but nearer average across agricultural areas further south.
Rainfall in winter 2010 was above average in the far north and north-east, but nearer average in the west. Rainfall totals were typically from 30 to 70mm, with some locations recording larger totals in isolated thunderstorm events. Yardea recorded 113.1mm and Moomba Airport 122.6mm, as the highest winter totals in the pastoral areas for this year.
Rainfall totals were generally near average but varied quite significantly locally with some locations tending below average through northern agricultural districts.
Rainfall totals were typically 100 to 200mm for the winter season, but more 30 to 60mm in the Upper Murray Valley, and 80 to 120mm in the Upper North districts. Higher totals of 200 to 400mm were recorded at most stations through the Lower South East district, Kangaroo Island, and the Mount Lofty Ranges , with several stations recording totals in excess of 500mm in this area. The highest total for the state was 561.8mm in the Adelaide Hills at Uraidla.
Some sites had their highest total winter rainfall for at least 25 years. Some sites had their lowest total winter rainfall for at least 25 years. See a map of rainfall deciles. For winter 2010, stronger than usual high pressure systems over southern Australia, particularly in June and July, contributed to overnight minimum temperatures tending more below average over the southern half of South Australia in winter 2010.
Maximum temperatures were below average this winter, with temperatures generally up to 1°C below average in the agricultural areas tending 1 to 2 °C below average in the pastoral areas. Mean maximum temperatures ranged from 9.5 °C at Mount Lofty in the Mount Lofty Ranges to 19.3 °C at Marree Comparison in the Far North District.
The warmest winter daily maximum temperature was 28.4°C recorded at Ceduna Meteorological Office in the Western Agricultural District on 31st August. The coldest daily maximum was 5.7 °C at Mount Lofty on 4 August.
Minimum temperatures were within 1°C of the long-term mean this winter, but generally slightly below average. Mean minimum temperatures average for the whole season ranged from 2.1°C at Yongala in the Upper North District to 10.1°C at Cape Willoughby on Kangaroo Island.
The lowest overnight winter minimum temperature recorded was at -4.5 °C at Renmark Aero on 6 July. The highest minimum temperature recorded was 16.8°C at Moomba Airport on 30 July.

A Seasonal Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in South Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 1 pm on Wednesday 1 September 2010. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
