South Australia in summer 2010-11: 3rd wettest summer on record

  • Summer rainfall was well above average across the state, with this summer being the 3rd wettest on record as a result.
  • 47 locations had their wettest summer on record, predominantly in the east of the State.
  • 67 locations had their highest ever daily rainfall in the summer period.
  • Maximum temperatures close to average overall.

Rainfall

Summer 2010/2011 was the third wettest summer on record after the summers of 1973/74 and 1975/76. 47 individual locations experienced their wettest summer on record, mainly locations through the Riverland, Murray Mallee and Southeast districts, though this also included locations in the Barossa Valley, and some locations into the northern Flinders Ranges and the southern pastoral districts, see summer rainfall records. The well above average rainfall was largely due to one of the strongest La Niña events on record in the Pacific Ocean, which peaked in late 2010 and early 2011.
Several heavy rainfall events were experienced over the summer months, the first of note being at the start of December. Warm and humid conditions combined with the passage of low pressure troughs led to wide spread shower and thunderstorm activity in the first week of December 2010. Several severe thunderstorms were observed with heavy rainfall and flash flooding. Close to 120 locations set new highest daily December rainfall records, predominantly on the 7th/8th of December, see summer daily rainfall records.
From the 12th to the 15th of January 2011 tropical air was drawn into a trough near the eastern border of South Australia, placing eastern border areas of SA in an extremely moist air mass. Heavy rainfall on the 13th led to close to 20 locations setting new highest daily rainfall records for January in the 24 hours to 9am on the 14th.
On the 5th and 6th of February 2011, Ex-Tropical Cyclone Yasi moved in just north of the South Australia/Northern Territory border. High levels of moisture associated with Ex-TC Yasi combined with the passage of a trough of low pressure across South Australia resulted in heavy rainfall and localised flooding across parts of the Riverland, Flinders and Mid North districts.

Pastoral Districts

Rainfall totals in the pastoral areas ranged from around 70 to 150mm, with higher totals at some locations up to 250mm.  Ernabella (Pukatja) had the highest rainfall total in the state this summer, with 341.8 mm.

Agricultural Districts

Totals in the agricultural areas ranged from 70 mm and up to 200 mm. Some locations, predominantly in the southeast, received up to 280 mm. The wettest location in the Agricultural districts was Parilla with 336.8 mm. Many locations in the eastern districts had rainfall totals 3 to 4 times the average for summer.

Some sites had their highest total summer rainfall on record. Some sites had their highest total summer rainfall for at least 25 years. Some sites had their highest summer daily rainfall on record. See a map of rainfall deciles.

Temperature

Maximum

Maximum temperatures were generally close to average across South Australia for summer 2010/2011 overall. In December maximum temperatures were generally below average across South Australia before shifting to above average in January. The last week of January saw well above average maximum temperatures through central parts of the State. On January the 25th Woomera and Leigh Creek had their warmest summer day on record associated with this, see summer maximum temperature records. Maximums then shifted back to below average in February.

Mean maximum temperatures over the pastoral districts of the state were generally within a degree of average, ranging from 31.5°C at Gluepot in the Northeast district to 37.4°C at Oodnadatta Airport in the Far North. The hottest summer day in the pastoral areas was on the 25th January with 48.5°C at Roxby Downs, a new all time record maximum temperature for that location, though this isn't in the record table below due to its short record period.

Mean maximum temperatures in the agricultural districts ranged from 21.3°C at Cape Willoughby on Kangaroo Island to 33.6°C at Hawker in the Upper North district. The highest recorded maximum temperature in the agricultural areas for this summer was 47.9°C on the 25th January at Port Augusta Aerodrome. The coolest daily maximum temperature was recorded at Mount Lofty in the Mount Lofty Ranges with 11.3°C on the 10th of December.

Some sites had their highest summer temperature on record. Some sites had their coldest summer day (lowest maximum temperature) on record.

Minimum

In the pastoral districts mean monthly minimum temperatures were close to 1°C above average, and ranged from 15.7°C at Gluepot Reserve in the Northeast district to 23.7°C at Oodnadatta Airport in the Far North district. The lowest recorded minimum temperature in the pastoral areas was 6.5°C recorded at Yunta Airstrip on 20th December 2010. The warmest recorded minimum temperature in the pastoral districts was 34.2 °C at Oodnadatta Airport in the Far North on the 28th January 2011, which was it's equal warmest summer night on record, see warmest summer night (highest daily minimum temperature) on record.

Over the agricultural districts mean minimum temperatures were generally close to 1°C above average. They ranged from 11.7°C at Mount Gambier Aerodrome in the Lower South East district to 18.9 °C at Port Augusta Aerodrome in the Western Agricultural district.

The lowest recorded minimum temperature for summer was 2.2°C at Coonawarra on the 7th of February 2011, whilst the highest recorded minimum temperature was 31.0°C at Port Pirie (Nystar) on the 31st January 2011.

Some sites had their warmest summer night (highest daily minimum temperature) on record.

Notes

A Seasonal Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in South Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 12 pm on Tuesday 1 March 2011. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.
