Extremes Maps Records Summaries Important notes the top
Apart from the far Northwest of the State receiving slightly above average rainfall this winter, rainfall totals were generally average to below average across most of South Australia, though southern Yorke Peninsula and parts of the far north pastoral districts received very much below average rainfall totals.
Winter began with June rainfall being below average to well below average across the western agricultural and northeast pastoral districts, tending above average in the far west and northwest for July. Despite high rainfall for central districts during early August, drier conditions persisted across most the State with well below average rainfall in the Northwest.
Growing season rainfall (April to October) to the end of August is at an average across most of the western half of the State, tending below average across eastern districts and well below average in parts of the northeast pastoral and southern Yorke Peninsula regions.
Winter rainfall in 2011 was below average in the northern and northeast pastoral districts, but nearer average in the far west and northwest parts. Rainfall totals were typically between 15 to 40mm across stations, though some locations recorded only around 30% of the average winter totals. The highest winter total recorded in the pastoral regions was at Yardea, with 88.6 mm, which is about 10% lower than the winter average that this site receives.
Rainfall totals were generally average to below average across agricultural districts during winter, though southern Yorke Peninsula received much below average, where Warooka received only 124.0 mm, 65% of the winter average rainfall.
Rainfall totals were typically around 100 to 200mm for the winter season, though for the Upper North districts, Murray Valley and the Murray Mallee districts, totals were generally between 70 to 120mm. Higher totals of 150 to 300mm were recorded at most stations through the Lower North and Mt Lofty Ranges. The highest total for the state was 403.6mm in the Adelaide Hills at Crafers (Mount Lofty).
Some sites had their lowest total winter rainfall for at least 25 years. Some sites had their highest winter daily rainfall on record. See a map of rainfall deciles.Temperatures across South Australia were above average to very much above average during winter 2011. The winter average temperature for South Australia was 1.0 °C warmer than the long term winter average of 12.3 °C. This places the 2011 winter in South Australia as 5th warmest on record. The warmest winter in South Australia was recorded in 2009 where temperatures were 1.8 °C above the long term average.
Maximum temperatures were above average this winter, with temperatures generally up to 1 °C above the average in the agricultural areas tending 1 to 2 °C above average in the northeast pastoral areas. Average maximum temperatures ranged from 10.7 °C at Mount Lofty in the Mount Lofty Ranges to 22.3 °C at Moomba Airport in the far Northeast of the State.
The warmest winter daily maximum temperature was 34.5°C recorded at Ernabella in the far Northwest on the 25th of August. The coldest daily maximum was 5.8 °C at Mount Lofty on the 12th of July.
Minimum temperatures were also slightly above the long-term average this winter. Mean minimum temperatures for the whole season ranged from 2.7°C at Yongala in the Upper North District to 12.5°C at Neptune Island.
The lowest overnight winter minimum temperature recorded was -5.5 °C at Gluepot Reserve on the 12th of July. The highest minimum temperature recorded was 16.0°C at Marree Comparison on the 2nd of July.

Extremes Maps Records Summaries Important notes the top
A Seasonal Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in South Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 8 am on Thursday 1 September 2011. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
