Monday, 1 June 2020 - Seasonal Climate Summary for Tasmania - Product code IDCKGC27R0
Tasmania in autumn 2020: wet, with cooler days and warmer nights
Rainfall in Tasmania during autumn was above to very much above average in most areas, except for parts of the Central Plateau and Upper Derwent Valley districts where totals were closer to average. Overall, it was Tasmania's wettest autumn since 1975. Daytime temperatures were generally cooler than average, particularly in the east, but nights tended to be warmer than average.
Wettest autumn since 1975
- Rainfall in autumn was higher than average across Tasmania, including areas of very much above average in the north
- Tasmania as a whole had its wettest autumn since 1975, with total rainfall 24% above average
- Early in the season, a wet day on 6 March saw some sites have their highest autumn daily rainfall on record
- Numerous sites, mostly in the Northern and Midlands districts, had their highest total autumn rainfall on record or their highest total autumn rainfall for at least 20 years
- For the year-to-date, rainfall has been average to above average across Tasmania, including an area of very much above average in the north
Coolest autumn since 2015
- Tasmania had its overall coolest autumn mean temperature since 2015, 0.28 °C below average
- Daytime temperatures were generally slightly cooler than average in most areas, including areas of below average in the east and far northwest
- The mean maximum temperature was 0.80 °C below average, the lowest for autumn since 2015
- Increased cloud cover reduced solar radiation, keeping daytime temperatures down, but also reducing heat loss at night-time
- Night-time temperatures for autumn were warmer than average across the State, particularly during April
- Tasmania's mean minimum temperature was 0.23 °C above average
- On 26 May, Ouse Fire Station had its coldest autumn day on record
- Cool days, particularly during March and April, resulted in some sites in the State's east having their lowest autumn mean daily maximum temperature on record or their lowest autumn mean daily maximum temperature for at least 20 years
- Year-to-date mean and maximum temperatures have been close to average across Tasmania
- Year-to-date minimum temperatures have been above average across the State
Hobart (Ellerslie Road)
- Total rainfall for Hobart (Ellerslie Road) was 165.8 mm, which is 117% of the long-term average of 141.8 mm
- The mean daily maximum temperature for Hobart (Ellerslie Road) was 17.6 °C, which is 0.3 °C above the long-term average of 17.3 °C
- The warmest day was 27.3 °C on 17 March, and the coolest day was on 25 May when the temperature reached 11.2 °C
- The mean daily minimum temperature for Hobart (Ellerslie Road) was 9.6 °C, which is 0.6 °C above the long-term average of 9.0 °C
- The coldest morning was 0.9 °C on 26 May, and the warmest morning was on 6 March when the minimum temperature was 15.4 °C
Severe winds at times
- Wind gusts over 140 km/h were recorded at Hogan Island during both April and May, with 146 km/h on 5 April the strongest
- On 2 May, many sites across the State recorded wind gusts in excess of 100 km/h as an intense low pressure system and cold front passed over Tasmania

Notes
The Seasonal climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Tasmania using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Monday 1 June 2020. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
