Summary

Winter 2007 was, overall, dryer than usual. Days were relatively mild, but nights were cold. However, there was considerable variability. East coast lows have been a feature of the season and much of Gippsland had a very wet winter, in contrast to the rest of the State.

Rainfall

The wettest District overall was East Gippsland (with 370 mm; well above the normal of 191 mm). The driest District overall was the South Mallee (with 41 mm; well below  the normal of 105 mm). During late June, rain bearing SE winds around an east coast low caused flooding in many Gippsland rivers.

Temperature

The hottest day was 29.9°C at Mildura Airport on 30 Aug. The warmest days on average were 16.5°C at Mildura Airport. The coolest days on average were 0.1°C at Mt Hotham. The coldest day was −5.2°C at Mt Hotham on 18 Jul.

The coldest night was −8.7°C at Dinner Plain and  Mt Hotham on 22 Jun. The coolest nights on average were −3.7°C at Mt Hotham. The warmest nights on average were 9.6°C at Wilsons Promontory Lighthouse.

Wind

The strongest wind gust was 137 km/h at Mt Hotham on 28 Jun, and 137 km/h at Grampians (Mount William) on 10 Aug.

Notes

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 4 pm on Friday 31 August 2007. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Normals are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of "normal" rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, normal in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of normal shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.
