Tuesday, 1 September 2009 - Seasonal Climate Summary for Victoria - Product code IDCKGC16R0
Winter
Across winter 2009 as a whole, we have seen both overnight and daytime temperatures about 1 degree above normal, accompanied by mostly patchy rain, although above normal totals were recorded across the Western District, the Wimmera, in South Gippsland, and about the higher ranges.
August
Specifically regarding August 2009, we have seen Victoria experiencing a warm month, with both overnight and daytime temperatures between 1 and 2 degrees above the long-term normals.
Rainfall was patchy, but there were some useful falls, with above normals totals across the Western District, the Wimmera, across West and South Gippsland, and also about the higher ranges.
August 2009 Synoptic Patterns
A feature of synoptic patterns through August 2009 has been the persistence of intense low pressure systems to the south of the Australian continent. MSL pressure has averaged between 10 and 14 hPa below normal across a wide area to the south and southwest of Tasmania.
This anomaly combined with pressures only being 2 to 4 hPa below normal across South Australia and NSW has meant that surface flow has been a stronger than usual northwesterly across Victoria (meaning that those areas exposed to such flow, such as the southwest and west of the State have had useful rains), with relatively few "cold outbreaks".
The sea surface temperatures set by the dynamics of the tropical oceans interact strongly with the tropical atmosphere, affecting winds and patterns of convection and precipitation, coupling back with the ocean dynamics. Atmospheric teleconnections can also affect conditions over many parts of the globe, including southeastern Australia.
At the end of Ausust 2009 we saw a mild warm anomaly over the central tropical Pacific, with mild warming having taken place over the previous month, which was tending towards El Niņo conditions. The temperature distribution across the tropical Indian Ocean saw a normal east-west temperature gradient.
Year
What has been observed across Victoria during the first eight months of the year have been overnight temperatures that have been close to, or very slightly above, the long-term normals, whilst daytime temperatures have been about half a degree above normal across the State. Rainfall since the beginning of 2009 has been below normal, except in the Western District, the Wimmera, South Gippsland, and about the higher ranges.
One of the driest parts of the State has been the Melbourne metropolitan area where several localities, including the city centre, have experienced their driest first eight months of the year.
An archive of previous seasonal summaries for Victoria is also available, as are summaries for other states and many other climate summaries and diagnostics.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Tuesday 1 September 2009. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
