Victoria in winter 2010: Average rainfall attributed to a record August
Exceptional rainfall throughout August has countered a particularly dry July leading to average winter conditions for the first time in years. The dominance of high pressures during the first half of winter, led to several cold snaps and sub-zero overnight temperatures state-wide. Despite some warmer than average days in June and July, cloud cover significantly moderated temperatures in August, which brought both maximum and minimum temperatures for the season close to the long-term average.
- Above average rainfall in the south and west
- Average daytime temperatures
- Slightly below average nights

Rainfall
Across the State, average or above average winter rainfall has been reported, with the exception of Gippsland, where the residual anomaly of a record dry July remains. The dry conditions in June and July occurred due to the dominance of high pressure systems across the Victorian region. This trend did not persist into August where a shift to frequent low pressure systems and cold fronts brought welcome widespread falls.
Large areas to the west and south of Victoria recorded above average rainfall this winter, with some stations reporting their highest total winter rainfall on record. Weeaproinah was the standout this season, receiving a winter total of 957.4 mm after record monthly falls in August. A heavy rainfall event in early June brought the wettest single day, with 233.2 mm falling in the Goulburn River.
Temperature
Maximum temperature
Maximum temperatures for the season were close to average, despite warmer than usual temperatures in June and July due to the prevalence of clear skies. Cold days throughout August were unusual in the context of recent years, with the Alpine region claiming one of the best snow seasons this decade. Icy temperatures, both day and night, were not uncommon throughout the season, the coldest day a frosty -5.3°C at Mount Hotham on the 28th of June. Mount Hotham also experienced the coolest days on average for the month, a chilly 0.0°C.
Several locations across the State also recorded their lowest winter mean daytime temperature since 1989, including Mildura Airport and Hamilton Airport. This highlights the unusual conditions experienced this season, as Mildura Airport also recorded the warmest winter day on the 31st of August (21.5°C) and the warmest days on average for Victoria this winter (15.4°C).
Minimum temperature
Despite some very cool nights in June and July, the minimum temperatures experienced across Victoria this winter were close to average overall. Stations along the Victorian coast experienced particularly mild nights this winter, with Wilsons Promontory Lighthouse experiencing the warmest nights on average (9.4°C). As would be expected, the coldest nights were observed in the Alpine region, with Mount Hotham averaging a frosty -3.9°C this winter. The coldest night was an icy -8.2°C at Dinner Plain on the 20th of July, however most locations across the State recorded their coldest winter nights on the 16th/28th of June and the 25th of August.

Notes
A Seasonal Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Victoria using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Wednesday 1 September 2010. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
