Autumn 2012 summary for Victoria: Wet in the eastern half, colder days and nights in the north
Autumn 2012 was characterised by:
- Above average rainfall in the eastern half of the State
- Maximum temperatures cooler than normal in the north and east
- Minimum temperatures cooler than normal in parts of the Mallee and North Central districts.

Rainfall
Preliminary data indicates that autumn rainfall was above average in the eastern half of the state, and mostly close to normal elsewhere. Many stations set new records for their highest autumn daily rainfall on 1 March. More detail about the event is available in Special Climate Statement 39 - Exceptional heavy rainfall across southeast Australia. The wettest overall was Mount Baw Baw with 583.4 mm. The wettest single day was at Mount Buffalo Chalet with 166.0 mm on 4 March. Rainfall for March was the highest on record in parts of the northeast with the rest of the State recording above average totals. Rainfall for April was average to below average over most of the state except for some parts of Gippsland and the Central district where it was above average. Rainfall for May was below average to very much below average in parts of the north and west but above average in the Central and West & South Gippsland districts. Many stations observed their highest total autumn rainfall on record while others set their highest Autumn daily rainfall on record. There is a map of rainfall deciles below.
Temperature
The warmest stations on average were Ouyen (Post Office) and Walpeup Research with 16.7 °C. The coolest on average was Mount Hotham with 4.5 °C.
Maximum temperature
Average maximum temperatures for autumn were cooler than normal in the north and east of the State. Elsewhere they were typical for the season. The hottest day was 14 March when Cape Nelson Lighthouse recorded 35.4 °C. The warmest days on average were recorded at Mildura Airport with 23.8 °C. The coolest days on average were recorded at Mount Hotham with 7.2 °C and Mount Hotham also recorded the coldest day on 25 May with -2.7 °C. Maximum temperatures during March were very much below average over large parts of the north and east of state. They were closer to normal in the southwest. Maximum temperatures during April were above average over the western half of the state and along the Gippsland coast. May delivered close to normal maximum temperature except for parts of the northeast where they were cooler than usual. Several stations have observed their coldest autumn day (lowest maximum temperature) on record and a couple of others had their lowest autumn mean daily maximum temperature on record.There is a map of maximum temperature anomalies below.
Minimum temperature
Average minimum temperatures were close to normal in most places. Minimum temperatures were warmer than usual in the Central district, including Melbourne, but cooler than usual in the North Central district. The coldest temperature for the season was -5.9 °C recorded at Dinner Plain (Mount Hotham Airport) on 31 May. Mount Hotham recorded the coolest nights on average with 1.9 °C. The warmest nights on average were 13.3 °C recorded at Wilsons Promontory Lighthouse . The warmest night was 15 March when Frankston AWS recorded 21.5 °C. Minimum temperatures during March were close to normal across the State except for some parts of the Central district and Gippsland where they were warmer than normal. During April, minimum temperatures were above average in southern and eastern parts of the State. Night-time temperatures were cooler than normal in the north and east of the State during May. Warracknabeal Museum has equalled its lowest autumn temperature on record and Mount Baw Baw has recorded its lowest autumn mean daily minimum temperature on record. Wind
The strongest wind gust was 139 km/h recorded at Wilsons Promontory Lighthouse on 12 May,.

A Seasonal Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Victoria using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Friday 1 June 2012. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
